Sky Simulations DC-9

Just curious if anyone whipped out the credit card and bought this thing. I know it can't be modeled accurately as far as systems go (no offense to these guys). But is it at least believable? I'm looking for a decent DC-Nine-o-saurus as I've been infatuated with them since I saw one first in Northwest colors at CLT when I was a kid--small child for the seniors in here. :( If not, are there any suggestions for a pretty DC-9 with a decent VC and systems. Not MD's offerings.

Check the FSX Forum - right at the top!

Windows 10 (x64) - X-Plane 11 - M/B: Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero - CPU: i7 7700k (@5.0GHz) - RAM: 32Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 @ 3200MHz - Video: GTX1080ti - Cooling: Custom water loop (EK 140 Revo D5 pump/res combo, EK EVO CPU block, EK XE360 Rad)

Not really had enough time flying it to give a completely definitive answer, but I'll give you my overall impressions.Straight off the VC is a tiny bit disappointing. It's not that it is bad, although it isn't up there with the shiniest and best. No, my disappointment was more centered around the fact that I was hoping for one that looked pristine, or at least nearly pristine, given that the things were released in the period liveries of when the DC-9 was new; yet the VCs look like I imagine many DC-9 cockpits look these days (i.e. a bit 'care worn'), which kind of jars with the gleaming new look of the vintage paint schemes on the exterior models. In terms of usability and FPS the VC is good though, and without going to obsessive levels of every single thing working, there is enough for a believable flight, with some systems tweaking beyond simply what is necessary to get in the air and navigate, such as playing around with the cabin pressure and hydraulics etc. But if you want intricate electrical bus bar failure modeling and all that kind of thing, some of the other MDs add-ons might be a better shot.So it kind of reminded me of where the Wilco/PIC 737 Classics are pitched - not obsessively realistic, but pretty convincing for those who want something considerably better and more immersive than a default FS aeroplane. The kind of simmer who can't be fussed with pulling the dipsticks out of the engines to check the exact oil levels - what I would call 'the average airliner simmer', that is to say someone who wants to do stuff properly in terms of navigational procedures and ATC, but would probably also appreciate not having to do an hour's pre-flighting just to get ready to taxi. That sort of suits the aircraft type too really, since it would probably fly sectors with fairly rapid turnarounds.Flight modeling-wise I think it is convincing, which again is what called to mind the Wilco/PIC 737, that being one of the strong points of that add-on too, and it too is FS9/FSX. You certainly cannot complain in terms of what you get for the money, there are numerous variants which come with it.Overall I think it has the potential to be a nice thing to have in your hangar so long as you are not someone who will be deleting it in a fit of outrage if fuse number 67 on the circuit board doesn't trip the exact systems it would on the real thing, although there is at least some of that stuff going on for sure.Al

thanks Alan for the quick review. I'm one of those guys who likes systems simulation, but not to the point of ultra realism. I have the Wilco 737 and love it. It's just at the right detail level. If i ever go on a long vacation or something, i might consider buying the LevelD or PMDG stuff....and really sit down and learn everything. For now, there's just no time in my life to spend 1 hour on pre-flight :( So aircraft releases such as this peaks my interest. I'm also a GA guy, but i love "old-school" tubeliners. I've never heard of this studio/project until it was announced yesterday on the front page. The DC-9 has a very unique look imo...it'll be fun to fly her around.I'm gonna have to wait for the FS9 version to come out in a few weeks tho...again, thanks for the review..helps a lot. -feng

Yup, but when you install it, the splash screens have the FSX and FS9 box artwork pictures in the top left and top right of then screen. Presumably this is so they can use the same slideshow on the installer for both releases, but it is a little misleading. Al

When I try to GET this DC-9, the buy process is in Spanish or non-English. What am I doing wrong. Where do I go to buy this aircrart so that I can process my order in English? Have any of you had this issue? (SkySimulations)Stan

HelloJust curious, how do you know it can't be modeled accurately as far as systems go? (it is as it happens)

For starters, if you take into account the track record, say with the MD-11 they released. That speaks volumes. Also, tell me just how accurate the systems are, if you know for yourself. I'm curious and no one has answered this question out right. The most I've heard about systems went something like this: "It's something like the Feelthere 737". If in fact it is, they should be reasonably accurate to the real thing. Surely you could see where I was coming from?

I think it was me who said it reminded me of the FeelThere 737, which was more about initial impressions of it than any deep knowledge of how accurate it is systems-wise.It's my intention to check it out more thoroughly when I'm in a position to acquire it for my fleet in Air Hauler, which should be tomorrow (I've already painted up a model 41 for the purpose, and the budget is 3.5 million bucks to lease a DC-9-41 which will be based at Luqa in Malta). I've always quite liked the DC-9, but, unlike the 737, I don't know a huge amount about it from a technical standpoint, so this will be my excuse/opportunity to learn more about the aircraft, especially since I've not had a DC-9 for FS before. For all I know it could be absolutely spot on perfect, but I'm not really in a position to knowledgeably comment at the moment. Yet even with my limited knowledge of the DC-9's systems, it is apparent that it has a fair bit of realistic stuff as far as hydraulics and pressurisation is concerned, and since the FeelThere 737 also has cabin pressurisation modeled, that was why the comparison sprung to mind.Al

Thanks Al. It was, in fact, you I paraphrased there. Since you're the only guy around that seems to really know anything about it! Hope you didn't mind me putting ya' out there.
