Radar Contact stops responding

Featured Replies

I've been using Radar Contact since August 2008, and I've never had any problems with it until today.I was on a flight from KATL to EDDL with the PMDG 744.Somewhere near New York, I transferred the comms to Otto (only the comms, not the controls). I went downstairs for a cup of coffee. And after returning on the flightdeck, I wanted to take back the comms from Otto with the keypress Ctrl+Shift+K. Unfortunately nothing was happening. The only keypress that worked was the key for displaying and dismissing the Radar Contact menu. Also no word from Otto or the controllers during the rest of the flight. So I finished the flight without ATC. After the flight I minimised FS2004, and I saw the following error message on my screen (see the attached screenshot). I have no idea what it means, but after I clicked "Ok" and went back to FS2004, suddenly everything started working again. The controller and Otto started talking again (even though I had already finished the flight).I have never run into this error before. Any idea what might have caused this, or what the error message means?Jon

typically that is caused by an older version of fsuipc. what version are you running? what other add-ons are you running, that might also be causing a conflict? are they up to date?jd

Hi,Are you using ASA by any chance? This is similar to the occurences using ASA and RC and the latest FSUIPC.Reported to the ASA team.Use AS6.5 no problemsRegardsNorman Bowman

In that case, and considering that the original reporter said RC carried on okay after pressing OK to the error message, it is most likely just a case of an overloaded FS not allowing RC to see the FSUIPC responses in time. RC will be timing out waiting for the change it needs. All this stuff -- RC requests and responses, ASA requests, and so on, is all routed through the Windows messaging system, and can pile up significantly. FS itself uses the message system for most of its coordination between modules too!Apart from trying to reduce the loading on FS -- eg. reduce demands from other programs, or from too much AI traffic, scenery, whatever, or moving applications to WideFS client PCs -- the only other solution would be to extend the timeout periods in RC. There does need to be some sort of timeout to prevent unexplained hangs, but possibly RC should not just stop dead when / if they occur, but log it, even report it, but not stop on a modal message box (modal = whole process stops till reply), especially considering that the message box won't be seen, being behind FS.Things to consider for version 5, for sure.Best RegardsPete

I just checked my FSUIPC and I have version 3.85It's not the latest version, but I think it's unlikely that this is causing the problem, because I've already been using Radar Contact since August 2008, and I never had problems with it up until now. Since Radar Contact hasn't been updated recently, it seems unlikely that Radar Contact suddenly has problems with FSUIPC even if it's not the most recent version.I think Pete is correct here. As I said it happened near New York. The addons I have for New York are: MegaScenery New York, Scenery Manhattan, ImagineSim KEWR, ImagineSim KLGA, FSDreamTeam KJFK and Active Sky Advanced. I was also flying the PMDG 744, so it seems logical that an "overload" was the problem here. My AI-traffic is set at 20%.Also I mentioned that I departed from KATL. The addons I have for Atlanta are ImagineSim KATL and MegaCity Atlanta, so that was probably also still loaded into memory when I arrived near the New York area.Extending the timeout in Radar Contact, as Pete suggested, maybe an option to implement in V5?Jon

this happens so rarely, i'm not sure i agree with the conclusion. update to 3.90, and start making logs for your flights that you believe will be problematic. if it happens again, send me the .logalso, is active sky up to date? if you can reproduce this issue on demand, try running the flight without ASA for deeper troubleshooting. send me the .log if it still happens without ASAjd

Hi jd,A short while ago I reported this same issue and after investigation it was found that the use of ASA was the culprit.I reported it to ASA and within the next few days they hope to have some updates available. When this happens I will try a flight with ASA again and report back. With me it happened when I had been flying just over the 1.5 hrs mark!!!!!!!!!!Ron pointed me in the right direction.RegardsNormsn
