August 4, 200916 yr Ok, So I don't use AI (slider is all the way to the left), but I have installed a very large number of AI aircraft for use with FSINN. I have noticed that, even when non using FSINN or any other program that generates AI, my framerates are significantly lower. So, my question is...does just having AI aircraft in SimObjects\Airplanes negatively affect performance? Thanks! Jeff Hepburn
August 4, 200916 yr Yes running AI will affect performance, but the FPS hit is worth the realism added.. I use the WOAI models and in YSSY i have had 105 planes being tracked by aismooth, fps is low but now i have quad core its more smooth, but it looks good. The AI that came with FSX have the biggest hit because there are flyable planes so have more going on then a straight AI model, which wont have a cockpit and less eye candy.

My point was that I have AI turned completely off. The difference I notice is just from having the models installed. Jeff Hepburn

I do know that FSX does scan those directories and files constantly, while it is running.FSX does scan your SimObjects/Your AI directory. I witnessed it doing this using the ProcMon utility. There are some old threads from 07 and early 08 here at AVSIM about using ProcMon to monitor file usage while FSX is running...they are very interesting threads. Unfortunately, I changed a few things at the same time, and I'm trying to narrow down what did it.Do you think that the fact that they are FS9 AI models has anything to do with it? I did some googling before I dropped them in, and I didn't run across anything that said it would be detrimental to performance. Who knows... Jeff Hepburn
August 4, 200916 yr Thanks Mace,I know if definitely takes a good bit longer to load. Unfortunately, I changed a few things at the same time, and I'm trying to narrow down what did it.I'd move all the AI out of there temporarily, and see if there is any change in frames. You should see better load times but on the frame side of things I do not know. You are in a good position to do a before and after comparison anyway.Do you think that the fact that they are FS9 AI models has anything to do with it? I did some googling before I dropped them in, and I didn't run across anything that said it would be detrimental to performance. Who knows...Well the fact that FSX scans all of these files and folders, tells me that it would not matter what the files are. The sim would scan them all anyway, no matter the type of model. I was quite shocked to see the massive file activity. Now of course, if you run the AI in the sim, you in some cases notice more of a frame rate hit with the FS9 models, but that is not really what you are concerned about I know. And not all FS9 models are bad on the frames. It depends on the way the model was constructed as much as anything. For an FSX model, we can optimize our models upon creation by being efficient with our use of Materials...but for FS9 models that doesn't apply. August 5, 200916 yr Commercial Member Mace Who has made a true FSX AI Plane? If one has been made who is putting them into a package for FP's.MyTrafficX has the majority of AI planes as FSX models. It's mostly the military and a few obscure PAX like JS41 that are in the process of being convertedTrafficX has all FSX models, but not quite as many variants as MyTrafficXUltimate Traffic 2 has mostly FSX models, and a few more to come in the service pack. August 5, 200916 yr Mace Who has made a true FSX AI Plane? If one has been made who is putting them into a package for FP's.JimUltimate Traffic 2 models are supposed to be FSX mdl's. I have not, however, loaded one of their MDL files into my hex editor to check. Next time I'm in there, I will load one, and verify. It is my understanding that F1/UT2 have taken the source .gmax files of the AI Aardvark, Fruit Stand, etc. AI models from FS9, and reworked them using the FSX Gmax Gamepack. This would produce a native FSX mdl file. I can also tell you that from my observation of the models, they have changed (read: simplified) a few things on the models (such as spinning fans), and I am sure they have done that with frame rates in mind. The alternate traffic management model in UT2 using SimConnect rather than traffic bgl file dramatically reduces the size of the reality bubble, also helping performance. www.supertrafficboard.com

August 5, 200916 yr well, i'm using World of AI here, with traffic on around 50%. And on the runway, when i'm not looking at the AI, my frame rate goes up to 40ish, then when i am looking at them, my frame drops to 16ish...So i guess they indeed are frame eaters... They are going to eat frames no matter what. But I think we have digressed from the original posters focus, and that was does the mere presence of the AI in the /SimObjects dir cause a hit.
