Mystery default aircraft?

Featured Replies

While deleting some addon aircraft from my FS2004 aircraft folder that I no longer wanted I stumbled across a folder named "md_83" which appears to be an "unlisted" default aircraft. It has texture files for "Soar", "Pacifica" and "Airwave" Airlines. The line "ui_manufacturer=McDonnell-Douglas/Boeing" appears in the aircraft.cfg file for each of the texture files for each. I'm stumped as to why this plane doesn't appear in the FS2004 aircraft "library" when I click on "select aircraft"! There is no panel folder, only model and sound folders. Does anyone know anything about this "mystery default plane"?Actually, I first saw this same aircraft in my FS2002 aircraft folder but deleted it without bothering to look at it thinking it was an addon aircraft I had installed but never flew. Image my surprise when I found it in FS2004's aircraft folder, too!

The md-83 and dash-8 are AI only aircraft. I think if you were to add the default 737 panel to them you could fly them. They do not have as much detail or the flight dynamics of the other planes.Bob

i5, 16 GB ram, GTX 960, FS on SSD, Windows 10 64 bit, home built works anyway.

I did try adding a panel (the default 737 panel) to the md-83. It still didn't show up on the aircraft list. It would have been nice if Microsoft had added a "description - this is an AI aircraft only" line to the aircraft.cfg file. It would have kept me from wasting a couple of hours trying to figure out what this was all about....Thanks for clearing things up for me!Scott

To get it to show in the FS menu you need to find the utility "Aired" and edit the .air file of the MD80. I can tell you from experience not to bother !

To follow up on pschulte remarks - get the free AirEd utility.http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=89432Use it to edit line 105 of the .air file (MD_83.air) That line is usually fairly near the top on the screen which will display.Change the current value on that line to 0 (zero) - (it is now 2) and it will display for you in the aircraft selection menu.I have the default b737_400 panel aliased to it and while it is far from "perfect", it is flyable. This file might also be useful:http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=52017Happy Flying! :(

FSX does not use the same system as FS2004 does to define what is flyable and what is AI only.FSX uses the presence or absence of a valid panel to make that determination. If there is no panel, or if the panel is not valid (is aliased to a non-existant one), then the aircraft is thought to be AI specific and is not displayed in the aircraft selection menu.Hope that helps.

Hi,You might also try just removing the panel.cfg file.

Ok i wil try that now i hope it works XD.
