September 11, 200916 yr I'm asking because i'm interested with this plane. However, i'm still learning how to nagivate properly. Of cause, with GPS on board. It makes thing easier for me as a start. If it does not, then i probably have to wait till i can fly the traditional way from getting from 1 location to another. Or any other PMDG plane have onboard GPS?
September 11, 200916 yr I could be a little wrong, but from my experience....The more realistic the add-on...the less and less of GPS and Maps, ect...I think there are aftermarket GPS systems, but I'm not really sure how all that works. I have the J41 and MD11 and neither have a GPS.
September 11, 200916 yr Ouch. But thanks for the info. Happens that the 2 plane that i wish to purchase also dont have that. But its alright. Realistic is what i'm looking for. LOLSo i'm cool. Let me at least get my VOR and ILS skill up and i will be clicking that checkout button. Thanks for sharing. September 11, 200916 yr It does have an onboard GPS system (which is embedded in its FMS) however this is probably not what you meant. You should have probably asked if it has GPS user interface similar to what other default FSX have, and the answer here is NO. Michael J.
September 11, 200916 yr Actually based on what i posted, probably you're already aware i'm still new to FSX. :)My concern regarding my skill is navigating around the world. If there's some form of GPS that can help me get my way around, then i'm pretty much cool about it. Still stuck at the VOR and ILS lesson. :DFlying and landing is not that tough for me since i've been flying combat sim for the past few years. IL2, Falcon 4 is the 2 main sim i fly. Falcon 4 have ILS and VOR but i never use them. I'm the VFR type. Thanks for the advice. Will the GPS embedded on the FMS able to tell me where to fly and land without fully knowing the VOR and ILS? September 11, 200916 yr Will the GPS embedded on the FMS able to tell me where to fly and land without fully knowing the VOR and ILS?Yes, because it has RNAV capability. RNAV gives you ability "not to follow" VORs in a traditional way. By the way you do not need GPS for that. There were RNAV capable FMSes long before mankind even invented GPS. For example when 767 was built over 25 years ago it had RNAV bo there was no GPS at that time. Lets not confuse RNAV with GPS. GPS is just another (lat, long) solution. Michael J.
September 11, 200916 yr The FMS is very easy to use - it is easier to learn on than the regular Boeing and Airbus FMSs. You type in your departure airport, select the departure runway and SID, program the fixes (just like a FMS), and then select the STAR and arrival airport. They you just insert your cruise altitude, transition altitude, pax/cargo weight, and fuel reserves, and you're done! September 11, 200916 yr Maybe I confused your question. I assumed you were talking about the FSX standard GPS you get on the stock planes. I am sorry.
September 11, 200916 yr You have to see the fms like a fancy version of the garmin default GPS in fsx, with vertical navigation, fuel indication, radio management, etc... A fms and a real Life GPS need some kind of road map, called enroute chart, this help you to find the path you need to follow to reach your destination. Try to look on Google for the free interactive enroute chart of all us. BEN
September 11, 200916 yr Shift + 1 pops up fs default gps with the J41 although I don't think the autopilot will follow as in default fsx aircraft, but it is good for reference purposes while flying.
September 12, 200916 yr Commercial Member What equipment suffix do most JS41s typically file as? Kyle Weber (Private Pilot, ASEL; Flight Test Engineer)Check out my repaints and downloads, all right here on AVSIM
September 12, 200916 yr Commercial Member Also, a follow up question, is there a way in the FMS/GPS to go direct to a waypoint not in the original flight plan? I tried erasing the current flight plan and typing in the fix as a new flight plan but experienced at CTD. September 12, 200916 yr Commercial Member What equipment suffix do most JS41s typically file as?Well, found this in the manual:B. Navigation/Flight Planning Inop1.The dispatch release should have the proper suffix on flight plan For example:1)/A for non-RNAV aircraft2)/G for RNAV-equipped aircraft with a functional GPS3)/I for RNAV-equipped aircraft with no operable GPSSo should this be /I if we can't shoot GPS approaches? (though this snippet comes from the inop FMS part of the maunal) Kyle Weber (Private Pilot, ASEL; Flight Test Engineer)Check out my repaints and downloads, all right here on AVSIM
September 12, 200916 yr So should this be /I if we can't shoot GPS approaches? (though this snippet comes from the inop FMS part of the maunal)I think you are right, it would be /ITo file /G the GPS equipment on board must be both enroute and approach certified. Michael J.
September 12, 200916 yr the aircraft is RNAV equipped with a Working GPS, the suffix would be G.if you had an airplane capable of RNAV, but without a GPS *Say an INS* your suffix would be I.Ryan.
