"Rename" the Aircraft folder?

Featured Replies

Hi!Is there any way to "rename" the Aircraft folder by changing some parameter in FS9.cfg or in the shortcut for FS9.exe, so that when FS9 starts it will use a folder called "Aircraft 2" instead of the regular "Aircraft"?Also, is it possible to do the same with the scenery.cfg, i.e. to make FS9 read a file called "scenery2.cfg" instead of the normal one?Cheers!/ Markus

Short answer - no.This does not stop you from renaming the files/folders yourself prior to starting the sim.Hope this helps,Joe

Well..In FSX it is possible to set up several FSX exe short cuts that will start the sim with different sets of aircraft. Might work for FS9. Beatle posted on this.Bob

Where? It would be easy enough to do with multiple installs of FS9, I am at a loss for how to do it with one.regards,Joe[edit]Never mind, I went looking and found this - http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=237387&hl=The consensus there is that you cannot do this in 9, only X[/edit]

I remember I used to have a folder called "hangar" inside the aircraft folder where I drag+dropped all the aircraft I didn't usually use. FS9 only loads the aircraft inside the aircraft folder itself. EG drag+drop or cut'n'paste every plane but the C172 to any other folder or subfolder, and FS9 will only let you select the C172. Sort of the opposite of what you're asking, but with the same effect.

Hello,

"...How to use multiple fs9.cfgs to create "settings profiles" for Flight Simulator" When you fly simple aircraft on low altitude VFR flights you probably like to crank your scenery, weather and AI sliders to the right for enhanced visual effect, correct? The problem with that is that tomorrow when you feel like flying a complex payware aircraft out of a complex airport, those higher settings will likely turn your sim into a slideshow, so you'll have to spend a few minutes turning everything back down again before you fly. These steps will show you how to save multiple "profiles", or groups of settings, and start the sim with whichever profile suits the type of flying you happen to be in the mood for. Start the sim and optomize settings for your first settings profile. Close the sim and make a copy of your fs9.cfg. (In Windows Explorer, right click and drag the fs9.cfg a short distance. Select "Copy Here" from the menu that appears when you release the mouse button.) Rename your "Copy of fs9.CFG" to something descriptive like "VFR_high-scenery.cfg" Start the sim and optomize settings for your second settings profile. Close the sim and again copy the fs9.cfg, naming it "IFR_low-scenery.cfg", for example Move to your desktop and make two copies of your MSFS 2004 desktop shortcut. Rename one of your copied shortcuts "VFR_high-scenery" and the other "IFR_low-scenery". Right click the "VFR_high-scenery" shortcut and select "Properties" On the Properties dialog, add the following switch to the "Target" field: more Repeat steps 7 & 8 for the "IFR_low-scenery" shortcut, add the following switch: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------You now have the capability of starting the sim using the settings profile of your choice simply by double clicking the appropriate icon on your desktop. "%APPDATA%" is a command shell "environment variable" that returns the path of the user's <drive letter>:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data folder, so the above switch should work on any XP computer without modification. Of course you're not limited to just 2 .cfgs, you can have as many as you want and create shortcuts for all of them. Also, you're not limited to strictly scenery or display settings. You could set up multiple .cfgs representing different joystick sensitivity profiles, AI traffic percentages, realism settings, keyboard key assignments, etc. You may make adjustments to any of your saved profiles while you have the profile loaded in the sim. When you close the sim your "VFR_high-scenery.cfg", for example, will be updated with any changes you've made during your session. Tweak and fine-tune to your heart's content, but DON'T MAKE DRASTIC CHANGES to your settings thinking that you'll be able to revert to your hard-earned settings by simply double clicking the desktop icon again. It doesn't work that way, in fact I'd recommend periodically making backup copies of all of your .cfgs to give yourself something to revert to should you forget one day and really mess something up. "But wait, there's more"... I seldom use "Create a Flight" because I have several flights set up and saved just the way I like them which start me out at various airports in various aircraft with various weather. Staring at the splash screen for 30 seconds, selecting a flight, and then staring at the splashscreen for another 30 seconds isn't my idea of fun, so I usually bypass the GUI (Select a flight, Create a flight, Flying Lessons, etc.) and double click one of my saved flights to start the sim. This takes me straight to my airplane sitting on the ramp somewhere ready to fly. So what happens if I want to bypass the GUI and go straight to my flight, but, at the same time I also want to load one of my settings profiles we discussed above? Guess what, time for another switch: /FLT:"%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\Flight Simulator Files\Previous flight.FLT" This switch, when used in addition to the /CFG: switch above, will (obviously) load your previous flight. Modify it accordingly to load any saved flight you desire. It would be perfect for example, to add this switch, modified to load a flight named "PMDG 737-800 Cold & Dark at KSEA.FLT", to your "IFR_low-scenery" shortcut. Likewise, a flight named "Default Skyhawk at PAJN, Glacier Bay Scenic.FLT" would be highly appropriate to add to your "VFR_high-scenery" shortcut.
It's from the now defunct site "Cat-Tamer"http://www.cat-tamer.com/flightsim/faq001.htmlI used this trick for my multiple installs and it's work great.Regards.bye.gifGus.

Gus, that sounds really neat, I assume it works for FSX too. But what "switch" mentioned in the document? Is it missing a picture or something? This is something I'd really like to try out. What is missing in here?:"On the Properties dialog, add the following switch to the "Target" field: more Repeat steps 7 & 8 for the "IFR_low-scenery" shortcut, add the following switch: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------"

Hello,This the switch of optional CFG's (mine named TEST following the procedure in the above message) My TEST.CFG is located in the root folder of FS2004When you are in properties ......In the target box you must add exactly:"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\FS9.EXE" /CFG:TESTIn the Start In box you must add exactly:"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9"This can be different if the location of your optional CFG and if your location of FS2004 is not by default like mine.Hope it's help.Regards.bye.gifGus.

MULTIPLE FS9.EXE: do it yourself! NO TOOL! Images related to this file:_179032-1.gif File Description:Hi friends, Some sceneries request TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL = 19, some 20 or 21?. Others work better with UNLIMITED FRAMERATE, some work only with frames limited to 24, 25 or whatever fps?. Some Photorealistic sceneries will get blurry when using EXTENDED TEXTURES, others no?. Some aircrafts have a specific joystick configuration; others like helicopters will have a completely different one?. I was personally fed up with spending time tweaking this poor FS9.cfg file, having thousands of different copies in my computer when I just observed that Microsoft offers us a very easy way to build several FS9.exe, one for each configuration. So now I have on my desktop several FS9 icons, each one is loading FS with its specific config Very cool, really and so easy to do!!!. Do you want to know how to do that in 2 minutes? So follow me! Guss I've just completed installing FS Addon's Misty Fjords, Tongass Fjords, FS Cargo, Freight Dogs, Glacier Bay and Vancouver Plus 1. The "fords" said to change that Terrain value from 19 to 20. Another said to change it from 19 to 21 and VancouverPlus 1 said to change it to 22. I did and now my FS9.cfg value stands at 22. I never could see any difference when I went from 19 to 22. What should I be looking for? Should I change this value EACH time I fly into a different scenery that calls for a different VALUE ? Thanks jerrycwo4

I assume you are referring the Vertex setting which is 19 by default. The higher numbers should make the valleys and hills somewhat more pronouced - steeper, if you will. I see quite a difference in some areas like Alaska and Canada but less of a difference in less rugged areas.

Hello,

Methink Opa answer clarified the subject. Can't say more ....So it's up to you to made or not some shortcuts for different CFG's .. it's just a matter of minutes..BTW don't fill your desktop with those .. it can be messy .. superbiggrin.gifRegards.bye.gifGus.
