lights sticking to screen edges

Featured Replies

Good evening, captains!Although this problem is not new to me, it is only today that I decided to write about it.It's not one of the problems which stop you from using FS, but can get irritating in the course of time. When flying between sunset and sunrise, especially in the dark, I can see a strange effect.Various lights (usually stars but also some ground or city lights) get stuck at my monitor's screen edges. It looks more or less like this (take a look at the left side and upper edges):starstick.jpgA short investigation indicates that, when I'm turning my aircraft, stars remain at the screen edges instead of just disappearing. They will be there both in the cockpit view and the spot view. The only (temporary) way to get rid of the effect is strange.I have to go into spot view and use my hat switch to move the perspective so that the aircraft gets over the ground or water. Then the screen edges 'clean up'. But in a few moments the lights (usually stars unless I'm at the airport or low manouvering) return. It is regardless of the aircraft I'm using and no matter where in the virtual world I am.I'm using full screen FS9.1 on XP 32-bit with E8400, 2GB RAM and GeForce 8800GT (pre-190 drivers with nHancer). My monitor is Samsung SyncMaster 957MB 19".Has anyone faced this problem? And do you know how to get rid of it?I've been doing some long-hauls lately and the nightime parts of my flights start driving me nuts. Thanks in advance.

I have the same exact problem, although on mine it's not really that big of a deal and I've never had a need to try to fix it. But I'm curious if there is a fix.

Hi Rafal, I also have this annoyance. FS9.1, XP Pro 32bit, X9650 @3.83 Ghz, 2Gb ram and GeForce GTX280 running driver ver. 185.85 with enhancer, and also Samsung SyncMAster 2253BW running in digital mode at 1680x1050x32 60Hz refresh.Rafal and Red, are you also running in digital mode, and what monitor refresh rate/ resolution? And Red, what brand monitor? All I know for sure is that with my old system (relevant parts, GeForce 7500 and Dell 19" analogue) never had this issue. What I do to temp fix is,.... 2d cockpit mode, numlock on, press "5" down view and the unwanted pixels clear then start accumulating again. I would like to get to the bottom of this too. You know how we FS pilots are; if it can be fixed, it must be fixed or we'll break something else while trying! For now, what I suspect is only the obvious and that is monitor, graphics driver and enhancer settings in some combination. Yes I know,...not very helpful, but I'll do some serious investigating - haven't before now. Maybe together we can find the cause and fix this. I will reply here with what I find one way or the other.Best regards to all,Mel

Hah, very true.I'm running a cheapy LCD (forget the name) with DVI link at 1440x900 resolution. I have the nvidia 8800gts 512mb with the 182 driver set and nhancer. You may be on to something with the DVI link cause I don't think I've ever had this problem with regular VGA links.

I have this problem also and it includes the navigation lights of the AI aircraft that move past the side of the screen. Besides the white dots for the stars, I have a collection of red and green dots.A fix would be nice since it's an annoyance, but for now I just change to another view (like to the side view) and then back to forward view and the dots are gone.

Hi all.Nothing meaningful to report. I spent a couple of hours flying the default C172 while going through all of the enhancer settings one by one. Other than seeing a lot of really twitchy night lighting and other expected awfulness, nothing re enhancer had any effect.Bruce are you also running your monitor/graphics card in DVI (digital) mode?I did notice that while I was doing a 180 turn the little pests disappeared by themselves.Yes, Red it does seem DVI may be at the root of this. Speculation here but perhaps it is something in the digital mode of the graphics card and how it handles the data sent to it by the MSFS graphics engine? I just took a moment to run DirectX Diagnostics to take a look at the 3d stuff. Outside of the FS environment everything performs fine. No such problem in any other application. So the next question is do any of you have any other type of sims or games installed and do they exhibit the same wayward pixels? I have run 3dMark06 and never noticed anything. BTW, should I assume we are all running FS9 and does anyone with FSX have this problem?I am not very knowledgeable about the digital stuff, just plugged the parts in, it ran, I smiled. So,... Oooooooh good, something new to try to learn! I will keep at it as time allows.Regards,MelP.S. Please, please, nobody out there suggest we all just fly during the daytime, thank you very much!

what monitor refresh rate/ resolution?
I' m using 1280x1024 with 85 Hz (the max my Samsung will let me with this resolution). However I did use different resolutions before with the same problem. What is more, my previous PC was much different (even having an ATI card instead of Nvidia) and, AFAIR, the problem was already there.I would reverse the question: is anyone NOT having this problem by night?

Rafal was your previous PC also in DVI mode? I should also add that my current setup does the same at all resolution settings. I think I'll try 1680x1050x16 just to amuse myself.Well it seems we are getting somewhere,...but it is so close to where we started!Regards,Mel

I've seen this problem since FS98, and have never been able to fix it. I believe it is related to anit-aliasing, because when AA is turned off, the "sticky" star bug is gone. This problem also occurs using a VGA CRT. For CRT users out there, one way to fix it is to slightly adjust (increase) the vertical and horizontal, so that the edge of the display is not shown, thus not seeing the "sticky" stars. As for LCD users, I don't know of a fix.RJ

Yes, I'm running with a TripleHead 2 Go Digital Edition using DVI ports on each monitor.

Thanks 3Green & Bruce. I just tested my system with your observations 3Green; (1): I switched off all AA in enhancer and started a flight at night [no weather just stars and moon],.....no sticky pixels but the sim sure looked bad otherwise! (2): Normal AA setting back on and repeat the exact same flight,......the sticky pixels were back. I admit I had not imagined turning off AA while checking per my previous posts. So thanks again 3Green. Now that the source is identified maybe we can cure it.Thanks All,MelP.S. A well meaning soul (I think) just suggested I border my LCD screen with electrical tape to hide the sticky pixels! Noooo,...........Not a option!!!!!!
