FSX mesh map?

Featured Replies

Do you know of a source for a map that shows how the mesh folder numbers of FSX relate to regions? I would like to install a global mesh, but would want to exclude Europe from the installation, which basically means I would have to delete the right folders of this installation. If you could point me to such a map, I would appreciate.Best, bernhard

I don't know if mesh is ordered the same as other scenery, but there is a detailed description in the SDK. If you don't have it you can also find it at Microsoft.I'd recommend starting at the beginning of the SDK so you have a chance to see all the topics that are covered. The detail you seek is probably in the Scenery and Terrain section.http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa155304.aspxLoyd

Hooked since FS4... now flying: FSX Acceleration on Win7/64, Core Duo E8400; GA-EP45-DS3R; GTX 460-768MB; 4G RAM; Freezer 7 Pro

You don't understand the structure of the mesh assembly. FS will ALWAYS use the highest quality mesh available. Thus there is never any need to delete anything. Just install higher detail mesh, ensure it is enabled in the scenery menu and it WILL be used.Only time you need to be concerned is if you replace equivalent mesh, and that is what the scenery menu is for- uncheck the one you don't want.

As Loyd says, all the necessary info is in the Terrain S.D.K. In short, in order to see the folder i.d. for each part of the world, launch the TMFViewer, load the image_globe files (in the Scenery\World\scenery directory), display a QMID level 4 grid and just point to the part of the world you want. The folder name appears in the status bar:As you can see, the relevant directory for the British Isles (most of them, anyway) and Brittany is 0501 and in that folder you will find a dem0501.bgl file that covers that area. Repeat the same process for any other part of the world.Best regards.Luis

I DO understand the structure. That's why I asked for the information. I have to DISABLE the global addon-mesh for Europe, because it is the same quality as the FSX mesh, but dsiplays more plateauing. So I need to know the folder numbers.I think the info I got here will help me. Thanks a lot.

No you don't understand how the FSX mesh structure works. If you are looking to replace default with aftermarket then doing it with file replacement is a mistake. A terrible mistake.Read this topic HERE. It starts by talking about Landclass, then from about two thirds down the first page it starts to talk in detail about mesh. Although you don't specify WHICH aftermarket mesh you are going to be using and therefore it's impossible for me to comment on the file structure system it uses, it sounds like you might be referring to FS Genesis. The topic link refers specifically to why installing the FS Genesis mesh to its default location is a mistake.1: FSX will always seek the highest level of INSTALLED mesh, no matter it's location on the hard drive or in the scenery .cfg. NOTE: INSTALLED implies it MUST be included somewhere in the `scenery .cfg`. You stop mesh from displaying if you UNcheck it from the scenery .cfg.Eureka moment: You can see immediately why installing replacement mesh to the same folder names as default is a terrible idea. Without knowing exactly which areas are referred to by the FSX mesh numbering system for the folders you remain totally in the dark about which mesh is in use in any particular area - and are completely stuffed if you have to replace it with default or even switch it off! It's the difference between a simple file delete and a complete reinstall of FSX if troubleshooting... Sadly, Justin at FSG seems to have got stuck in the old FS file recovery format where one could easily recover individual files from the FS200x installation CD's. As we know, in FSX you can't do that, and a repair install replaces more than just the files you want to `fix` so a complete reinstallation is usually required to restore default files if anything goes awry with a FSG uninstall. FACT: Putting ANYTHING in a default folder is not recommended for scenery unless you specifically want to repair/replace a default file.but fortunately...2: Where mesh of EQUIVALENT level is installed, FSX will use the LOWEST numbered entry in scenery .cfg, as displayed in the GUI. NOTE: If you open the scenery .cfg directly, the display order reverses, so that the HIGHEST numbered `Area.xxx` takes priority. Knowing these two facts it is simple - really simple - to take full control of your mesh files. Use the guide in the link above. In this case you can take your `equivalent` addon mesh and place it in a separate folder, install it in the scenery .cfg in the normal manner, placing it just above the default number folders. FSX is now using the higher quality mesh where it exists, and the `equivalent` now gives dominance to the aftermarket. Now all you do is remove, uncheck or reposition the aftermarket file you don't want to run to a position BELOW the twinned default, and the default will display. But depending on the developer these file numbers may bear no relation to the default numbers. So you need to know the specific coverage and file name for that coverage. Your request for default file coverage does not necessarily relate at all to the file name convention for your addon.

Hi FolksScott -Your grid overlay and numbering doesn't match the FS systems locations.e.g. 06 western boundary runs down zero meridian. The file system used to store all the terrain information is based around the following grid.Cc707102.BaseGrid(en-us,MSDN.10).jpgExplanation and further info at ESP SDK.HTHATBPaul

It' s more that YOU don't understand what I am trying to do.Default mesh for Europe = LOD 9.FSGenesis mesh for Europe = LOD 9 (exception = The Alps = LOD 11), but displays more plateauing.FSGenesis mesh installs itself in the fsx/scenery/world/scenery folder, using the folder structure there - which basically tells me it covers the same areas than the default mesh junks do.I want to install the FSGenesis mesh in the fsx/addonmesh/global/ folder that I create and activate it in the scenery.cfg.Then I want to know which files I have to delete from FSGenesis(!) to not allow it to override the default mesh for Europe.Or simply put: I want to know which files to delete from the FSGenesis installation to have it cover the whole world but NOT Europe.

Excuse me, Paul, as an addendum (not a negation) to your remark concerning Scott's grid, he is displaying a QMID level 7 grid which is how most of the individual default files are clipped.According to Doug Matthews, who handled development of the FS X terrain:Some QMID grid levels of note:4 - corresponds to the scenery buckets on disk (i.e. 0405, 0302), as well assome of the data files like NVX (nav aids), ATX (airways)7 - corresponds to the individual APX (airport) OBX (obstruction), BRX(bridge), CVX (vector) data files.11 - is the level Shp2Vec clips at except for...15 - is where Shp2Vec clips freeway traffic. So, while his grid does not indicate the limits of the default mesh, it is perfectly valid and aligned with the FS boundaries for most other files. As to the original poster's dilemma, all he has to do is to load any third-party mesh in TMFViewer in order to see its limits and whether he should delete it or not.Best regards.Luis

Hi Folks Luis -Cheers for your reminder.I should have spotted that Scott's grid was a QMID7, (LOD5). :( though my response was wrt to identifying the QMID4 mesh folders.Scott -My apologies.HTHATBPaul

Oh sure, did that, but no response so far, so I asked the question here, too. Thanks to all the people here for their help, btw.
