Another sound question - experiencing muffled aircraft sounds

Featured Replies

I have often thought my sound was a little muffled sounding in FSX. Now that I have the QW757, I can confirm that what I hear in FSX is not what I hear in the preview videos leading me to believe there is an issue with my sound settings in fsx.I am using the soundmax drivers - they sound fine when playing music or video - they only issue I have is in FSX. The FSX music sounds just fine as well when FSX starts up, it is the aircraft sounds that seem muffled. The problem is I can't find the sound quality adjustments in the FSX ui. Where are they? I know where the volume settings are but I don't see a quality adjustmentSecond, I could just make the adjustments in the FSX.cfgHere is what I have for sound now, what should I change? I'm assuming quality and LOD should be changed but I don't know what the values can/should be used.[sOUND]AmbientUIMusicVolume=-6.000000SOUND=1SOUND_QUALITY=2SOUND_LOD=0UISound=1AmbientUI=1PrimaryDevice={ACB1B4AA-24B6-4A1C-B431-5074D3EBF407}VoiceDevice={DEF00002-9C6D-47ED-AAF1-4DDA8F2B5C03}SOUND_FADER1=0.780000SOUND_FADER2=0.600000SOUND_FADER3=0.860000SOUND_FADER4=1.000000AmbientUIMusic=FSX01

Hey Jeff, I dont ever recall seeing any actual sound quality adjustment in FSX itself, beside the menu that allows you to change the settings for engines, ATC, environment, etc.The more I read about you sound issues the more it sounds like the trouble I was having with my SoundMax card. When your in the FSX main opening screen and you have the 4 options for A/C, Airport, Weather, and Time/Season, when you click on the options do you get a low sounding thud, or do you get a higher pitched sounding click that sounds real sharp? When I had my SoundMax card I was getting the low thud click, now with my new card I am getting the higher pitched click sound, plus no other issues. To be honest there has been so many documented cases of people having problems with SoundMax cards using FSX, maybe this weekend if you have some extra time and a few extra bucks you should go buy a new sound card.At least if you buy one and things dont improve you most likely will be able to return it and get a refund. Plus it only takes about 10 minutes to remove your SoundMax card and drivers and install the new card and drivers.I was going thru so many issues with mine and spent weeks looking for tips and tweaks all over the internet to get my card to sound and work better, then a few weeks ago for a whole $100 I got my SB Xtremegamer X-Fi card and have never been happier with the sound and performance of FSX.It maybe worth a shot Jeff? You can always return it if it doesn't work for you.

There is also a drop menu in sound settings. I get two choices there, the onboard sound card and my X-Fi sound card. So, remember to choose the right sound device.

Along this line, I reinstalled UT2 (traffic), and for some reason I lost all the sounds, but finally checked enough boxes to get the engine sounds working with the onboard MB, but now I do not get any ATC voices?? (the conversation does show up in the ATC popup screen), but not the same as hearing them........any ideas how to correct this or change some settings??............have a high end computer with the 8800GT graphics card...............B42L8

From searching about my issues, I noticed your problem a few times but I don't remember what the solution is. Try Googling it an I bet you will find something. The more I explore my sound settings, the more I think Sean is right about the drivers. Changing the Soundmax EQ settings does nothing with music. It sounds the same regardless of what setting I use for each frequency. This leads me to believe that the drivers are delivering sound but they are not truly functional.I'd still liek to know what the sound_LOD setting in the FSX.cfg is though. Does anyone know?

I don't think 'LOD' does anything. Probably included for future development (yeah, like that is going to happen). Here is what I have.[sOUND]AmbientUIMusicVolume=-6.000000SOUND_FADER1=0.740000SOUND_FADER2=0.680000SOUND_FADER3=0.610000SOUND_FADER4=0.500000AmbientUIMusic=FSX01SOUND=1SOUND_QUALITY=2SOUND_LOD=0UISound=0AmbientUI=0PrimaryDevice={DEF00000-9C6D-47ED-AAF1-4DDA8F2B5C03}VoiceDevice={DEF00002-9C6D-47ED-AAF1-4DDA8F2B5C03}// '-6.000000' might not be 'legit' for Ambient sound (it's just my of saying 'Cut the Elevator Music! hehe).//Notice 'sound_lod=0'. ('0' MAY mean 'default').//Notice 'sound=1' (if it was '0' then = to no sound ('Q' key was pressed)).//Notice Primary and Voice devices are same (ie: onboard AC97). Device//is set thru Cntrl Panel and 'Sound & Audio Devices'.//Your overall settings for sound can be checked thru 'DXDiag' tests.Chuck BNapamule

Funny thing with DXDiag tests on my system:DxDiag says that everything is working properly but it doesn't offer me the option of running any tests. All this makes me thing the Soundmax drivers are the source of my problems.

Mine did the same also. Ran the DxDiag test before and after installing new SoundMax drivers and it said that everything was fine, even though somewhere along the line it wasn't.It will be interesting to see what happens if you change the card out for something else. If a new card fixes the problem you will probably be kicking yourself for not doing it sooner like I was. I wish I had done it earlier instead of living with those issues for the past year.

Well I just picked up the same card that you have and I am about to install it. Even if it sounds the same I will probably keep it just to get the sound off the mobo. I have wanted to buy a card for years and I never do because my old ac97 onboard seemed to work ok.

I can't wait to see if it fixes the problems for you. I hope it works out as well for you as it did for me. BTW, make sure not to use the drivers it came with and d/l the newer ones from the SB website.

Thanks Sean. I think it is much better. There is a noticeable oomph in the sound performance. I got a little crackling on the TSS 737 sounds but I can play with the settings.I didn't install anything from the disk - I never do.One thing I noticed is that the driver I downloaded (SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_18_0013.exe) didn't have all of the tools that I see in the manual - eq...Were you able to download them or did they come with the driver?Once I downloaded the driver. It asked me if I wanted to run and update for Creative. There are a ton of updates Creative is listing as critical. Did you install any of them or did you just install the driver? I really trying to avoid any bloatware but I would like to have the Eq and any other important software.

I don't have my driver exe anymore, I guess I deleted it, but in hardware manager is says my driver version is 6.0.1.1373 dated 6-3-09. Not sure about all the tools, I noticed mine doesn't have some stuff in the adjustment panel as well like the EQ adjustments. I didn't install anything but the driver. I don't like things that are going to be updating or checking for updates without my knowing about it. The only thing I did in my SB control panel was turn off the "enhancements" and "effects". I just want the plain, unfiddled with sounds. As far as the EQ stuff, i'm not sure why we don't have those. I am going to stick with mine the way it is since its working so well and don't want to take a chance messing it up, but you may need to go to thier website and investigate how to get the EQ.Maybe they have a forum over there you could browse or ask on.Glad that so far it's working better for you.EDIT: I just went back to my other drive and found the SB driver exe. I do have the same one that you downloaded.

I agree, I really don't want all of that stuff - it usually just causes problems.I think there was more stuff on the disk. In addition, if you run the update app it will show a bunch of stuff to download.Like you, I'm just going to stick with the driver.

Glad to hear that you got it working. Hopefully over the next few days you will be able to fully test it in FSX and make sure everything is working well.
