Problem with ILS

Featured Replies

Hi: Im having dificulties to follow the altitude (vertical) signal from the ILS, not having the same response as with the horizontal signal.Im trying to get both at around 6.000 feet. Am I to high? Or too low? Or should I modify something in the program? On the other hand at 4000 feet I have noticed Im too near from the field.Any help or your experience on the matter. Thanks, flacs

Which aircraft and what is the airport elevation?

What does the approach plate call for as the intercept height?RegardsRichie Walsh

Which aircraft and airport. Are you using an ATC program with vectors?Do you see the ILS vertical marker as well? Not all instrument systems have a glide slope. The horizontal indication travels out further than the glide slope signal. In addition there is a bug in FS9 and I think in FSX in that by default all localizers have their back course enabled. Many large FS airports have the same frequency shared at opposing ends of the same or parallel runways enabled. Unless you are within about two degrees of the localizer center line you could be using the wrong one. Check your localizer ID displayed as part of the PFD to insure it is the correct one.Remember that you must intercept the GS from below it, that is the GS indication will be above center. Here's a typical 3.00 degree vertical profile. In this you are given the minimum altitudes along the GS. On some plates there is a cross symbol indicating the closest (FAF or Final Approach Fix) you can expect to intercept it. KMSP's runway threshold here is 823 feet MSL. The profile shows altitudes in MSL so looking at the special description at the stated intercept point AABEZ the lowest altitude is 4,000 feet MSL at about 7.5 nm from the threshold which is ILS DME 9.8 typically measured from near the end of the runway. In this case you intercept at 3,177 above the threshold elevation or 3,160 above the airport elevation. For steeper glide slopes required by terrain obstacles the AGL would be higher for the same distance out.The 25 mile MSA based on a VOR about twenty miles north from this angle is 3,500 MSL but the minimum slope altitudes are based on other considerations. At some airports you might be required to join closer and at a lower altitude.Get a plates of the destination airport so you'll know what to expect. You might find you may need to descend while on your intercept course. For FAA airports I download the bundled terminal procedures with airport diagram from flightaware.com Enter the ICAO code in the bottom and click on airport information and work your way to IFR plates. In many approaches the FAF is about seven miles at

Thanks: Im flying the 737NG. Airport elevation is 6 feet.Jose.

Two items, please sign with your full name. I recommend you posts your requests for help on how to fly the 737 in that section of this forum. I think Ron went out of his way to try to help you with general information on ILS procedures but I think you need some friendly tips on managing the aircraft.
