Everything but 60 FPS is unsmooth

Featured Replies

Hi Bob,Really appreciate the shared "tweaks".But, to you and anyone else, I wont get into a big debate about this, but...the "display.cfg tweak" is no tweak at all, really. Iam pretty sure the display.cfg was just a type of hardware compatibility file for hardware the did not support the full DirectX functions in the sim and so would dumb the sim down for performance and features etc.Real FPS increases can be had...but they are simply a result of shaders being turned down or off, which results in the diferent effects being minimized or turned completly off, thus performance goes up. Any of those settings can be adjusted in the the FS display menu, turning bloom on/off or water effects settings etc etc..It has been tried to death, and Phil Taylor shed the light on the above as well as Nick etc. If I come across the links I will post them.

Wow, it's interesting to see I am not alone in this issue.Yesterday I posted this http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=273916 , now I found this thread.I too have the same issues when FPS drops below 60 on both FS9 and FSX.I have upgraded my computer to try and fix this issue, but no luck.I never had this issue back with my 7600gt GPU, but now I have got my 9800gtx+ and suffer choppy graphics below 60fps. However I am now using an LCD and not a CRT, with the 7600 I was using a CRT monitor.I will try Bob's display.cfg change and let you know how it goes, however I have multiple driver entries in DxDiag report, shall I enter all of these in or just one copy of each.

Driver Name: nvd3dumx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvd3dum,nvwgf2um,nvwgf2um Driver Version: 8.16.0011.9107 (English) DDI Version: 10Driver Attributes: Final Retail Driver Date/Size: 9/27/2009 17:12:22, 9441384 bytes WHQL Logo'd: n/a WHQL Date Stamp: n/aDevice Identifier: {D7B71E3E-4552-11CF-A156-78031DC2C535} Vendor ID: 0x10DE Device ID: 0x0612

I really appreciate the help for this issue, it has been driving me crazy for so long.Best RegardsSimon.

For some reason all my old PT links dont work, must have been his blog before it got moved.Only thing I can come up with right now is this link:http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_post...&PID=173986

For me, the most important setting is the PanelAsTexture setting. No claims for better FPS, but I can say definitively that without this in the display.cfg file I was seeing black screen crashes left and right. If you look at the default display.cfg entry for the older nVidia cards (nv4disp.dll), it has the Disable= and PanelAsTexture= settings there as well. The Shader settings are a tweak picked up elsewhere along the way.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

Thanks for your suggestion w6kd.This is in my dxdiag file:Vendor ID: 0x10DEDevice ID: 0x05E2Driver Name: nvd3dumx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvd3dum,nvwgf2um,nvwgf2umThen, is this right to add at the very top of the display.cfg:[000010DE:000005E2:nvd3dumx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvd3dum,nvwgf2um,nvwgf2um]Disable=1PanelAsTexture=0Shader20Plus=20UseShaders=1Thanks

I tried to add[000010DE:000005E2:nvd3dumx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvwgf2umx.dll,nvd3dum,nvwgf2um,nvwgf2um]Disable=1PanelAsTexture=0Shader20Plus=20UseShaders=1But, I didn't see any difference at all compared to before.

I added the devices.cfg tweak. Unfortunately it did not cure below 60fps stutters. However the sim did seem to be able to hold 60fps more often with the tweak.I decided to force a lower resolution than my LCDs 1680x1050 60hz in the nvidia control panel reducing it to 1600x1024 50hz. I found that when running at 50hz flight simulator 2004 was able to run at 50fps and above with no stutters. However if I locked the frames below 50 the same stutters would return. I won't be running windows/fs2004 at 1600x1024 as the clarity is disgusting on my 22".It seems like is some sort of issue with the drivers vsync system and flight simulators 2004 frames.Running with vsync forced off yielded frames at over 150fps with no stutters, but bad texture tearing.I added a post over on the Nvidia forums.Best RegardsSimon.

So, to the bottom with the problem. Why do I, and some other, have problem with the vertical sync in FS9/FSX and the stuttering/freezing when not set to 60FPS? And most people are able to play without any problems at all with the GTX 200-series? Is this dependent on what brand and model of the card you choose, or what?

I've been asking the same question for a while now about vsync and tearing, as it seems many can run fs fine without vsync enabled. Seems that either people don't notice the tearing or the tearing is minimal. All of this I'm pretty sure is the result of all the various components in a particular system.

Hey, cant argue with what is working for you. :)But really, it probably points to something wrong somewhere else. I have run several different 200 serries cards, and am using a 285GTX and have never had the issues you describe and have never entered anything into the display.cfgIf you notice the display.cfg seems to only list in the case of NV card for instance from the latest the 5-serries cards and back, yet 6 serries had been two years before FSX came out, 7 serries started to trickle out in 05 (8 serries were out just months after FSX came out). so in the case of "If you look at the default display.cfg entry for the older nVidia cards (nv4disp.dll), it has the Disable= and PanelAsTexture= settings there as well" those were only there for cards not fully DX9-C capable and would not need to apply for other cards such as the 6 and 7 serries cards that were out while FSX was in development. The display.cfg list only cards not fully dx9c capable (FSX is a DX9C game). NV Serries 6 cards and up are fully DX9C capable. You might want to try a un-re-install of DX10 and then your display drivers and see if that helps.

Well, this is all black magic and voodoo anyway since there are no docs to explain what the settings do.nv4_disp.dll drivers for nVidia cards were/are DX9c capable. And here we're discussing an FS9 issue anyway, which was designed for DX9a.AFAIK, DirectX is an integral part of Windows and can't be removed once installed. Regardless, it's working well here, so no need or desire to rebuild Rome!Back to the OP's issue...it might be worth setting the frame rate limit to 30 (half the screen refresh rate, or one frame refresh every two VSync strobes) and see if that resolves the stuttering.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

Docs were available, it has been addressed by Phil on his blogs and he pointed out that the display cfg has always been there to address incapatiblity, but they got moved...I'll keep searching. Thanks for pointing out about being FS9, I was looking at all things FSX related and that is the data in my post...Coffee is just not as good as it use to be...now, where are my glasses?

For me, 30 is one of the worst values to lock at. For example, 34 works better, but not good.

Sounds like you may have some issues that are overiding some of your settings. Search for feedback on best older drivers for your card and OS then try un-installing all display drivers and related software like Enhancer/RivaTuner, All of them. Run Driver cleaner, and now install the selected driver and without anything else, try just adjusting the settings from with-in the display driver menu and go back thru and retest.

Thanks, I'll try. I did set Vertical Sync to OFF again, now, and tried FS9. I got lots of tearing, but it runs so smooth when locked to 30 for example. No problems at all, but I can't live with the tearing. Then Vertical Sync back to ON, tearing is gone but the stuttering/freezing is back again.
