February 28, 201016 yr I just installed windows xp 64 bit pro sp1 :( , mother board drivers, Ati 9-8_xp64_dd_ccc_enu.exe ,NetFx64.exe ,and dxwebsetup.exe. Reboted then installed fs9 all files :( . The system shows all of my 4gb of ram and everything seems to be working as in keyboard etc. Then started fs9 and everything works fine except that, I am getting about half the about of frame rates :( that I was getting with windows xp pro 32 bit.I tired changing my frame rate tab to unlimited and it didn't seem to effect anything. My question is for those that use B) windows xp 64 bit pro what do I need to do that is different from a windows xp pro 32 bit os set up ,besides making sure the drivers are for a 64 bit os?,I have read so many statements stating windows xp 64 bit is the way to go .please help.....My specs B) FS9.1Intel Core i7-960 Bloomfield 3.2GHz oc to 3.5ghz stable corsair water cooledASRock X58 Extreme LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboardkingston hyper x DDR3 2000 pc16000 4gbCreative sound blaster gamer extremeATI 4870 2048 mb video cardintel sdd 160 gb hardrive
February 28, 201016 yr HelloI set XP64 SP2 as per N.Needhams guides My frames are definitely better than I had under XP32, I lock my frames at 30 and I never see them drop no matter what aircraft or sceneries I use.Make sure you have the latest Visual C++ service packs installed and the latest DX9 update, follow Nicks setup guide and see how it goes.http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1208959973

I just can't understand why the sim is shuttering so much ,compared to smooth flowing fs9 in the 32bit os even with no changes to the default install.

March 1, 201016 yr Hello:I would recommend that you setup your system as per Nick's "How to tune it right" advice:http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041With your system, you should get GREAT performance! You may still need the >2GB switch / "Large_Address_Aware" provisions to prevent OOM's in FS9 on long distance many hour flights, but framerates and performance should be no problem.I have the i7-975 CPU with the same OS you have, but there should not be that great a difference from your i7-960. FS9 is out of site, and FSX is faultless on my system. My system is also overclocked as per Nick's recommendations, but in all honesty it ran just fine with default timing and doesn't seem to really need the overclocking. At KJFK with heavy ASA weather and the PMDG 747, framerates were in the mid to high 20's in FSX. Overclocked they do increase significantly, but these old eyes see little difference in performance. AT the defaults they really looked fine to me. In FS9, you can forget even looking at framerates. They are not an issue by even those that just have to see high numbers.I do have the GTX285 video card rather than your ATI. However, if you had no problem running with the 32bit system, I would think that would be academic.Good luck!RTH I just installed windows xp 64 bit pro sp1 :( , mother board drivers, Ati 9-8_xp64_dd_ccc_enu.exe ,NetFx64.exe ,and dxwebsetup.exe. March 1, 201016 yr Author Rhodges,First off,Thank you :( for taking time out of your day to reply . I do not use fsx at all ,in fact everytime I install it ,I remove it that same day :( .As for fs9, I use it daily. What I was wondering was the settings that you have found for fs9 considering nicks guide focuses on fsx mainly. Thanks again! :(
March 2, 201016 yr Hello Again:Interesting that you are so hostile to "fsx". I fly both FS9 and FSX extensively and personally feel that you are missing out on the best of both worlds with your system, but to each his own.For all of my internal FS9 settings, I really have not paid attention to them for some time, nor do I have any particular reason that I remember for these choices. I have been satisfied with what I was seeing and have not thought about it as to why, when, or how I came to these settings. I don't remember haveing any particular problem with any settings I have tried. I would suggest you simply experiment with these settings. My settings are as follow:For Options>Settings>Display>Scenery1. All sliders are maxed out full right except for "Terrain detail - Land only" and "Water effects:Low" . 2. All option boxes are checked with the exception of "Lens flare".I really have not seen any significant negative impact with any other combination of these options. For Options>Settings>Display>Aircraft:1. "Global aircraft quality" is set to "Medium Low". This is automatic due to "Reflections" not being checked.2. Slider is maxed out full right.3. All option boxes are checked with the exception of "Reflections".Again, I really don't even know why I don't have "Reflections" checked. Don't remember if this was advised by Nick or someone else or not. I also rarely fly with a "virtual cockpit" as this just is not usually my personal preference, so in windows mode I don't know but what this setting is simply academic. For Options>Settings>Display>Weather1. "Global weather quality" is set to "Ultra High" I believe this is automatic as a result of the other settings.2. "Sight distance: 80mi ~ 128km"3. "Cloud draw distance: 40mi ~ 64km"4. "3-D cloud percentage:100"5. "Detailed clouds" is selected for "Cloud Detail".6. "Cloud coverage density: High" for the slider.NoNote: I have used "Active Sky Advanced" for weather setup until today. I just upgraded to "Active Sky Evolution".For Options>Settings>Display>Hardware.1. "Device name:" is "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285.0" and "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285.1". Obviously, if you have an ATI card, this will be different for you.2. "Target frame rate:" is set to "40". However I have noticed no difference at other settings including "unlimited".3. "Available display resolutions:" is set to "1280x960x32". No problem with more complex resolutions, but these old eyes don't like the small text size.4. "Render to texture" is checked.5. "Transform and lighting" is checked.5. "Anti-aliasing" is unchecked. (See NHancer settings below)6. "Trilinear" is selected for "Filtering:"7. "Mip mapping quality:" is set to "3".8. "Hardware-rendered lights:" is set to "6".9. "Global max texture size:" is set to "Massive".Note: I had already typed the following before I remembered that you have an ATI video card. My assumption is NHancer can not be used with your system, but for what it is worth:NHancer Version 2.5.7 settings for the "MS Flight Simulator 2004" profile:Enhancements:Anti-Aliasing is checked.Combined and 16xS are selected.Window shows 2x2 SS + 4xMS and a black autoNote that one piece of advice in a post was to select 8xS to avoid shimmering. I tried this and it worked after suffering from them for years in FS9 (None in FSX). When I went back to 16Xs, I still had no shimmering. Don't really know why this scenario worAnisotropic Filgtering is checked.16x is selected.Window shows a black auto.Vertical Sync is checked. On is selectedForce OpenGL Triple-Buffer is selectedWindow shows a black autoOpimizations:Texture filtering is checkedHigh quality is selectedWindow shows a black automaticTrilinear optimization is checkedOff is selectedWindow shows a black automaticAnsio. sample optimization is checkedOff is selectedWindow shows a black automaticNegative LOD BIAS is checkedClamp is selectedWindow shows a black automaticNote: This is a very important selectionAdjust LOD BIAS is checkedWindows show 0.000 and a Green AMForce DXT3 (OpenGL) is checkedOff is selectedWindow shows a purple OOLPrerender Limit is checkedWindows show 3 and a green AMPower management mode is checkedMax performance is selectedWindow shows a black autoCompatibilityAnti-Aliasing compatibility is checkedWindows show 00000000: general compatibility and a black autoAnit-Aliasing compatibility DX10 is checkedWindows show 00000000: general compatibility and a black autoDirect 3D 9 compatibility is checkedWindows show 00000000: general comaptibility and a black autoForce mip maps is checkedNone is selectedWindow shows a black autoHigh Dynamic Range (HDR) is checkedenabled is selectedWindow shows a black autoDynamic tiling is checkedWindows show 1 and a black autoCPU Multi Core support is checkedSingle core is selectedWindow shows a green AMNote: According to Nick, selecting Multi core has no function even though we have multi core CPU's.Note: All of these are "Direct 3D settings. My understanding is that "OpenGL" is not used for FS.Note: These really are the same exact settings I have for Global and my FSX profile. The only exception was my 8xs Anti-Aliasing selection in Enhancements for a while.I am attaching my whole kitchen and sink specs for anything that might be worth. Although I do use WideFS and two computers, I would think that the difference between your setup and mine should be negligible.Good Luck:RTHPrimary computer:ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 LGA 1366 Intel ATX MotherboardIntel Core i7-975 Extreme Quad Core CPUScythe SY124010L CPU Fam6GB (3x2GB) 240 Pin DDR3 1600 OCZ3P1600LV6GK MemoryWinXP Pro 64 BitEVGA 01G-P3-1180-AR GeForce GTX 285 1GB 512 bigt DDR3 Video Graphics Card21

March 2, 201016 yr Author djt01, :( I totally agree with you, from my experince of fsx. Rhodges, :( Thanks again for your help.
March 2, 201016 yr There are countless posts regarding framerate requirements as to what one can see and not see. I leave that to you experts and can only comment on what I see. Maybe you are one of the folks that has the ability to see the difference between 30 and 60 Framerates in FS, or for that matter even higher comparrisons. I confess I cannot. Presently, I have FS9 set to 40 and she is as smooth as can be as near as I can tell.I see absolutely no difference in smoothness between FS9 and FSX as both are smooth as satin with no signs of pauses or stutters that I can see.The smoothest any game is going to be is when the frame rate consistently matches the refresh rate on the monitor (which with an LCD is 60fps) with v-sync enabled. As far as the old 30-60fps comparison goes, the human eye can see differences in frame rates with a computer monitor as high as 70+ fps. Here
