FSGenesis: hideous problems with default waters

Featured Replies

I installed the new North Atlantic Mesh addon by FSGenesis a few days ago, only to discover that the default water, in combination with this addon, screws up the scenery. Every niceness of flying to Greenland has been magnificently crushed because of lakes and water extending several tens of feet into the air or vice versa. This way, i end up with mesh scenery that on the whole is good, but because it does not cure these default water anomalies, has become quite useless. Now, I was told by Justin, of FSGenesis, that he tends not to meddle with the water and such, and leaves it to other addons. the problem is that to my knowledge there is no addon that covers waterclass for Greenland. Ultimate Terrain does nu cover Greenland, and I don't know of any other addons that do a similar thing, but cover Greenland. So, my question is a simple one: does anybody know what addon could solve this issue, so that I don't have these lakes forming inelegant hills that extend several tens of feet in the air, or that form valeys various tens of feet into the earth? My enjoyment of flying over Greenland has been crushed because of this, and I'd appreciate it very much if somebody could suggest an addon to cure this ailment...

Perhaps you can try the Lakes and Streams packages from this site: http://www.flightsim.gl/downloads.html?tas...ory&catid=3You'd expect the location of the streams and lakes in those packages to be more precise and thus more in line with the newly released mesh, but I'm just guessing here. Perhaps look into the coastlines as well. Thanks for posting by the way, it looks like existing customers can download some of the new goodies as well.:(

Thanks for the reply! I'll try the lakes and streams, although if I remember correctly, the "Extreme Greenland" portion of the downloads was FSX only. If you look at the screenshots, you might also notice the unusually high quality of the ground textures. Still, one can always try, no?It says about these two packages that the water is "laid over the mesh", which is good. You'll at least won't see those hills and valeys anymore. I do ask myself if the default lakes will disappear if I add this in. One way to find out, I guess...EDIT: Well, that didn't work. If it has any effect, than I don't see it. Does anybody know how to solve these issues in general? I have the feeling that the default lakes should simply be deleted or something, or perhaps altered in elevation or something... If at all possible I might end up doing it myself, because this really is completely and utterly spoiling my flying experience. There I was, thinking better mesh would be nice -.-By the way, what exactly does FSGlobal offer? Is it just mesh, or also landclass and waterclass?

Have you tried Flight One's ultimate terrain for USA???. It will solve a lot of your coastal and lake placment issues. You can't blame FS genesis mesh for inaccurate data used by Microsoft.

UT:USA doesn't cover Greenland since, obviously, it's not part of the USA. None of the UT releases covers Greenland, sadly. It's true I strictly speaking can't blame FSGenesis for the inaccuracy of Microsoft's data, but what irritates me is the fact that when they tested this they must have seen the huge amount of "waterplateaus". You really can not ignore it, it is not a small issue. The "big" international airport of Greenland, BGSF, is practically surrounded by these plateaus! I'm just wondering how one can release a product when this problem is so terribly obvious, and still not do something about it, given the fact that there doesn't seem to be any addon out there capable of fixing it. If there would have been something to fix it, okay, then it's fine by me. That's not the case however.I can't be mad about the mesh addon - it does what it's supposed to do, and the look of hills and cliffs has indeed been improved dramatically. I just can't get my head around the fact that nothing was done about this before release. I'm not asking for FSGenesis to do all the waters in Greenland, but at least do it for the inhabited portion of it. That's where all the flying will be, so that has to look good. Or is this way too much to ask? Here are some examples:http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c77/Thra...20-57-47-37.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c77/Thra...20-55-27-89.jpg

Oops, didn't think about that at all.
You know, plateau lakes do exist in real life. Some artificial, some not. Perhaps you need some reference material so you can compare.:(

Hello,I have the same problems with FSgenesis on lakes or reservoirs in some locations. Some are also burried (low leveled) in the terrain. Those are errors as they are not on 'plateau" or "low leveled" in real life :)I use the Fsgenesis meshes for all the parts of the world.Check this on the Mauritius island if you can.Regards.bye.gifGus.

No doubt. I've seen some too, but that doesn't mean all of them are. Haven't been to Greenland recently...:(

Just had another look. Unusually high? LOL! ;-DAnyway, I've just installed this new mesh as well. Let's see how it looks.

Hello,

My remark was for those located in Mauritius island (all the inland water of this particular island) as notified in my post :)

Some don't means all of them that's right :)Regards.bye.gifGus.

Yeah, in hindsight they weren't. Yesterday I went equally low over the terrain, and it was just the same quality. Still, FSX or not, it didn't solve the plateau problem... I recommend taking off at BGSF. The amount of plateaus there are inordinate and I can assure you that's not how it is supposed to look.

Gus, because of the way you structured your first post, it was hard to understand what went with what. Forgive me for misunderstanding.:(

I recommend taking off at BGSF.
BGSF, will do....LOL! Looks nice!:(

Wow O_O With you it's even worse! Must be the influence of the third party greenland scenery I have installed...I heard that it's possible to make this alright by changing the waterclass so that it's laid out over mesh. The water surface won't be as flat, but you won't have these plateaus. Now, anybody know exactly what programs you need in order to do this?

What is your TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL set to in the FS9.cfg file? Mine is at 21. That might explain a difference as well.No idea what to do and how to do it though.

Hope I'm not speaking out of turn here, but I just had alook around BGSF with FS Global Special Edition mesh and dont get the raised water with that. You could try disabling the corresponding flatten file (the fl***.bgl ?) for the area but it will alter other things too. Could you use LWM Viewer or similar to change the individual flattens?Dave

The flatten files, FL9nnnn0.bgl control airport flattens only.Lake elevations are controlled by HP9nnnn0.bgl files.LWMViewer is a great tool to locate the right files. You fly, or slew, to the area in question, start LWMViewer, and click on "follow FS" and it will automatically open the files related to your position. However LWMViewer is just that, a viewer. It cannot edit files. For that you need another program. I have messed around with lake elevation adjustments using SBuilder. I know there are other programs too.Not knowing how to automate the process, I can say it is a tedious one. If you have just a few that have to be changed, it is do-able.If you wanted to do it on a larger scale, I recommend you post in one of the scenery design forums. There are some pretty smart people there (not that there aren't any here).regards,Joe
