XP64 and GTX 480

Featured Replies

I have ordered the EVGA superclocked GTX 480 Fermi gpu to replace an older 260 GTX to complete my new i7 930 rig. I run WinXP64, and have learned of a BSOD issue with this card in FSX SP2 on this OS. Does this bug manifest itself only in the newer Nvidia drivers, or will i be safe if I use an older driver like the very stable 182.50? I am grateful for NickN's work with the Nvidia folks in working on correcting the issue, but I don't know how long it will be till this is resolved.Would I be better off leaving the 260 in the machine till a cure is found, can I just use and older driver with the new 480? I suppose I could also rollback FSX to SP1, but I fear that will not play nice with some addons.

You would be better off running Win7x64 than XPx64. The GTX480 was designed for Win7/DX11. I made the switch fro XPx64 to Win7x64 when I got my GTX480SC. FSX runs much better on Win7x64 than it does on XPx64.Regards,Bob

Hey Bob,Good to see you writing. How are you?Stephen

Hi Stephen,I'm still in quite a bit of pain (I guess the product of removing one of my ribs) however I am off the heavy narcotics. If all goes well, I'm gonna try to go back to work a week from Tuesday. I have a survelliance CT scan for August 11 hopefully, I remain cancer free for sometime despite the aggresive nature of the sarcoma I was diagnosed with (Malignant Fibrous Hystiocytoma). I'm not quite ready to go through another lung surgery.Regards,Bob Modrowski

I had big problems with Vista 64 when I built my i7 rig. Texture issues, disappearing planes, etc. You suggested that I go with XP64. Do these issues not manifest themselves with W7?Kdub

If you are running Vista x64 or any OS for that matter and have issues with textures or disappearing planes you need to add the following to your fsx.cfg file under the GRAPHICS section as shown below.[GRAPHICS]HIGHMEMFIX=1This is something Bojote figured out a few months ago. If you have Win7 x64 I would also recommend the switch to it from XP x64. XP is a legacy OS and as such is not going to receive the driver support that W7 will. The OP of this thread was asking about a GTX480 which at present will not work properly in XP x64, as I myself found out the hardway when I got my GTX480, hence why I now run FSX on Win7. Win7 runs FSX flawlessly.Regards,Bob
