July 28, 201015 yr So the geeks who did my current box are convinced I need a new C: 1TB hard drive. Getting a bad drive message prior to the POST. Fine. It's going to be a long ride with reinstalling all the other programs I use, but FSX AP is what I wish to address here.I believe I know about all the places I have FSX files in Win-7 64 bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator XC:\Users\{{Me}}\Documents\Flight Simulator X FilesC:\Users\{{Me}}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSXAside from Registry entries that will be made automatically during reinstallation of FSX in Win-7 64 Bit, do any of you wonderful, knowledgeable sim dudes out there have an additional tip that might make this a better ride? I am just trying to make it an easy transition with all my scenery, mission, and aircraft mods.Cheers, GreystonePM me, or try [email protected]

Not sure what you are trying to do to pinpoint the location of FSX files since you are reinstalling FSX. You should not use an old fsx.cfg or dll.xml after you reinstall but allow those files to be rebuilt.Best regards,Jim

If I let FSX install the new fsx.cfg, why can I not just use the settings in my old .cfg the way I like them? Same with the .bin file for my pilot logs, rewards, and whatnot? What are the ramifications of just overwriting the personal stuff on top of the newly written installation?Thx, Greystone

Reinstall of FSX in proper order should take care of that.scott s..
July 28, 201015 yr Moderator First thin I'd do is NOT put FSX in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X folder - this causes problems in W7 due to the way W7 handles permissions for files in that folder. If you do not have a seperate drive for FSX then just put it in it's own folder like C:\FSX - you'll be glad you did.Don't screw around - uninstall and reinstall or you might just make a mess of it and wind up doing the uninstall reinstall anyway. Save the aggravation - do it clean and get on with it.There are some people who will spend weeks trying to do someting the easy way when they could have done it the hard way in hours.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160

I guess the message is clear: A clean install on D: or E: and don't screw around with the cfg and bin files. Too bad about the logbook. I was trying to keep it intact for an online group I fly with. Assume I can simply move my freeware and payware aircraft into the SimObjects folder along with various panel and gauge configs that I have modded out?
July 29, 201015 yr The FSX log is a dog to put it bluntly, have a look at something like 'FS Flight Keeper' it has the best logging system in the business and that is just one small part of what it can do, its probably one of the best purchases I have ever made for FS. Cheers, Andy.

Just backup the NEW ones JIC the 'old' one gets corrupted - then copy over and you should be good to go.As far as FSX.CFG - best to let it build a new one and add your mods after.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
August 2, 201015 yr I see no need for a 1TB drive unless you are storing a zillion files.'c' drive only needs to be around 250GB tops. Then use other drives for games, etc.My 'c' drive is a 250 GB which formats to 232 GB and has W7 Pro x64 with a bunch of utilities on it and a 16 GB swap file and I still have 168 GB free space.
