A while ago I downloaded a freeware plane that didn't work with the DirectX 10 preview, so I turned it off. I recently heard that turning on the DirectX 10 preview will help with framerates in FSX, and in my battle against low framerates, I decided to turn it on and see for myself if it helped. However, when I went to the graphics settings, the option to turn on the DirectX 10 preview wasn't there! I haven't made any changes to my computer (that I know of) that would stop DirectX 10 from working. So now I'm trying to get it back and I hope someone here can help me.

Assuming you are using Vista, or Windows 7, go into your fsx.cfg file look in the graphics section, you should see the following line that should be set to 1 on to use DX10 Preview. If it's set to 0 switch it to 1. If it's not there add it.If your OS is Windows XP, then you shouldn't have DX10 preview.D3D10=1

Under Vista and Win 7 it's Users/xxxx/Roaming/AppData/Microsoft/FSX - Where xxxx is the user account FSX was installed under.

Okay so I went in the fsx.cfg and the line wasn't already there so I added it, but the option for the DirectX 10 preview still isn't there. Was the line I added supposed to make the option appear, or is the preview enabled now even though the option to turn it on isn't there?By the way, I have Windows 7.

I think the line is supposed to turn on DX10 preview.I don't know if it actually works when FSX doesn't show you the DX10 option though, it might get ignored. FSX should show you the DX10 preview option as long as you have a DX10 capable video card and Windows Vista/7, so it's weird that it has disappeared...Do you run FSX under Windows XP compatability mode or something like that? I don't know if that would remove the option, but it would make sense if it did.

Sorry to ask, what kind of graphics card do you have in your PC and have you changed it at all since the last time you said DirectX 10 preview was there. Just asking in case you had a problem with your old card and then you happened to replace it with one that doesnt have hardware DX10 with it.Craig

I have a ATI Radeon HD 5800 and haven't changed anything since the DirectX 10 preview was working.

DX10 preview mode is horribly bugfilled in my experience and will cause crashes. Thats why the vast majority of FSX users do not use DX10 preview

I figured it was worth a try anyway. Its not like once I turn it on its that way forever.

Rename your FSX.cfg to fsx.old, then restart fsx and let fsx rebuild your config. Your settings will return to the default but it should bring back DX10 Preview.Best regards,Jim

Could be something happened with your graphic driver or the DirectX install. You can try reinstalling them.

Do you have FSX SP2 installed? If you have recently run a repair install of FSX then most likely you don't have any SP's installed at all.
