September 9, 201015 yr I saw a presentation at the Museum of Flight by the lead engineer and test pilot on the original 747. One of the things that the engineer was proud of was the fact that the plane made sense for long hauls, but also, that Japanese airlines would fill the up with fuel and boxed lunches and do four quick segments before re-pleneshing - and that they made money doing it. In the US I've been on 777s and 747s in the United System on flights as short as ORD to JKF or IAD, and DEN to SFO. That was a while ago - I'm an Alaska frequent flyer now.
