September 22, 201015 yr I have done a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit with a new WD Black Caviar 1TB HDD split in to two partitions, one for the OS system and programs and the other for data. I also added a WD VRap 150 GB SATA 3.0Gb/s for FSX and FSX Simulator Expansion Pack. I intend to run all FSX data files and add-ons in my data partition. Questions: What kind of separation provision for FSX files and addons should I make in my data partition, and please give me any advice as to what should go into the VRap HDD? I figured only FSX and FSX Simulator Expansion Pack. Thanks in advance. September 22, 201015 yr 150GB is pretty big. I'd stick everything FSX related on there. I'd install the simulator plus expansion, and look how much space is left, then install addons onto velociraptor one by one, leaving scenery till last. Once all addon aircraft/scenery is installed I would then install traffic and check how much space remaining. If enough, I'd then install REX , GEX etc.
September 22, 201015 yr Moderator Do NOT put all your add-ons on the FSX drive. There are some, like UTX and GEX which install to FSX but most other addons like REX should NOT go on the FSX drive - complete waste of valuable drivespace.Aircraft add-ons are fine. Scenery and texture add-ons - it depends. Weather add-ons - no.150G is a great size for FSX - you can put quite a bit of data on it and still have over 50% free space which is ideal for drive efficiency.Put as much as you can on your data drive and only put what's needed on the FSX drive.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
September 22, 201015 yr If you had read my post correctly Mr. vgbaron, you would see that I said only install REX, GEX and UTC if there was sufficient HD space left available after installing everything else.
September 23, 201015 yr Moderator I'll say it differently Chris - no matter how much space he has left on that drive, he should NOT install anything that doesn't NEED to be installed on the FSX drive. The less data on the drive, the more efficiently it will run so anything that is not actually NEEDED to be on the FSX drive should be eliminated. Now, if he had a 600g Vrap it wouldn't be as important. What I'm talking about it looking at the complete picture. Since most of us FSX'ers tend to tweak away to get out systems running as best we could, then every little part helps. Why overclock your memory, CPU and videocard and create a bottleneck on the HD or other small anomalies. By itself, the HDD issue isn't going to make or break the FSX install but if the OP is aiming to get the best out of his system, he'll need to make every part operate as efficiently as possible. Loading up unnecessary stuff on the FSX drive is not efficient.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
September 24, 201015 yr Ah yes sorry. Didn't quite understand what you were getting at before. Thanks for clarifying. I agree now, it's true that REX, GEX and UTC are not required on the VRap. Don't bother installing them on there then.
September 24, 201015 yr I am just setting up a computer for FSX, and this was a good question (for me, too). Is there a guide/list of what installs where?I will be using a 600G Velociraptor. Initial installs will be PNW, REX, F1 Mustang, F1 PC12 (maybe).....Later: GEX, UTX.Thanks for all the info already.....Bill.
September 24, 201015 yr Bill,PNW, F1 Mustang, F1 PC12 and UTX need to be installed on the FSX drive. REX and GEX install to your OS drive or data drive.Regards,Bob
