September 12, 200322 yr OUCH. I went and checked the FScene website, and the cost is 25 Euros per region per season So to get "more realistic" textures I have to pay over 100 dollars per region to get all for seasons, and to get a complete set I pay over 200?I can understand the amount of work that went into this product, but I can't help but feel that lowering the per unit price can't help but increase revenue.I mean if it were 25 Euros per region for ALL Seasons, then I could get a complete set for about 50 bucks. and I can't help but feel that by slicing the price to 1/4 it's current cost, you would generate 4 times the sales you do now. But, hey, the developer can feel free to charge what he want's to. It's just a shame that he feels that to make any profit he has to charge 4 times the amount of the original sim he supports.(and that only covers US and Europe.......)
September 12, 200322 yr Author >>I can't help but feel that by slicing the price to 1/4 it's current cost, you would generate 4 times the sales you do nowEr .. cut the cost to a quarter of what it is now and generate four times the amount of sales. Kinda seems to me a pointless exercise as far as the developer is concerned :-hmmmI paid about $200 to get the VFR Photographic scenery of the UK and consider it very good value. You get what you pay for IMHO.The whole question of the cost of payware is really being flogged beyond death. Just because it's a hobby doesn't mean that the price charged should not reflect the time and effort put into it. It's all a question of economics - payware developers just do not make the volume sales to be able to lower their prices.David
September 12, 200322 yr While I know that sim addon potential sales volumes are somewhat limited, that doesn't invalidate the item_price/volume_sales curve. For the product in question, I won't even consider it at the current price...but that's just me.
September 12, 200322 yr I disagree. FSgenesis charges very reasonable rates for their mesh and land class and Justin is hardly a big time developer.income = price per unit x units sold. You might not see how decreasing the price by 75 percent helps him, but if he gets 5 times as many customers, then he makes more than he would have before.I mean Austin Meyer is developing X-Plane, and I can't see how FScene required 3 times the work as X-Plane.The whole price/volume equation is like a bell curve. There is always a place where you will maximize your income.Finding your place on the curve takes a little bit more research than just "tallying up how much your time is worth"Just because you put a lot of "time" into it, doesn't mean you have to charge exorbant prices. You claim the developer can't afford to lower prices. I contend that quite frankly he can't afford not to.Of course it seems everything in Europe is much more expensive, but if he did lower prices, he would see so much vast potential here in the US.Wal Mart didn't become the largest employer of the world by accident. Large Volume, low prices = HUGE profits.
September 12, 200322 yr Moderator For $200 bucks I could rent a plane and see the real thing!vgb RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
September 12, 200322 yr Author >>Wal Mart didn't become the largest employer of the world by accident. Large Volume, low prices = HUGE profits.Well, I'd like to see them do it with the FSGenesis scenery then. Wal Mart sell a vast amount of products that the majority of people want or need. Unfortunately, not that many people want or need MSFS addons.David
September 12, 200322 yr >I disagree. FSgenesis charges very reasonable rates for>their mesh and land class and Justin is hardly a big time>developer.>>income = price per unit x units sold.I agree, I didn't even consider buying any of the FSGenesis stuff until Justin's recent sale. Then, thanks to a 45% discount for bundled purchases, I bought all 5 of the 30m US terrains, the 75m Canadian terrain & the landclass. September 12, 200322 yr Where I come from that is called being a cheapskate --no offense intended. Before ya get upset, please read the rest of this missive. For those of us who saw the potential in Justin's work, the $100 Galaxy membership (while seemingly steep at the moment) proved to be the best FS investment I ever made. Justin is slowly "covering the world" (like The Sherwin Williams Paint co.). He is only limited by the speed NSA releases their STRM data. He is currently finishing up the entire South American continent having just finished Central America and the Caribbean.Every new area he releases further reduces the unit cost for me to practically nothing.BTW, Justin is not even charging an upgrade fee for moving his stuff over to FS2004. Course all he had to do was tweak the installer to look for the new texture folder loaction.OTHO, no such total package membershp is available for FScene or FSLandclass (both of which I have) so it's a good thing I'm staying with FS2002 for the foreseeable future. Cause no way I would not buy those products at the full asking price. I already bought them once.If they had offered upgrades to existing customers for say $10 to $20 it would have been appropriate. Having to pay the same price(again) as a brand new user is a terrible insult to the folks that contributed to their economic bottom line in FS2002.There's an adage in Econonmics that 100% of nothing is still nothing. If the product pricing is above the perceived threshold value to the consumer, that is exactly what the seller will get -- nothing.Sorry for the rambling but I got carried away :)Racartronit means something, but I just can't remember what
September 12, 200322 yr I had FSCENE for FS2002 but I think the default one of FS2004 is far more realistic then the adjusted FSCENE textures for FS2004...Also the quality is lot better then FS2002 :-)All Seasons worldwide already paid for it in FS2004 :-hah (better price :-lol)Further the price scheme isn't from this planet :-eekNope even if the price is 5 euro per season I stick with the default or Megascenery stuff ;-)Andr André
September 12, 200322 yr Yes, I am a cheapskate.I currently am running FS9 on a Athlon 2400XP Compaq that I paid $498 for, added 80 bucks worth of memory and a 90 buck FX5200 card. For less than 700 dollars I get 90 percent of the performance of someone who purchased their system for 3 times that much.Yes, My card can't do 8x or 16X AA, and granted my Frames run around 18 to 24 most of the time.I never thought of purchasing Justins stuff either until the sale. But with the Bundle discount, it's like he is giving it away. And each person that discovers his mesh, he has us hooked.I have all the US covered in 38m. Hawaii in 10m and the land class. I am thinking of putting Canada in 76m next, but I need to ask him about the "quality" of the sampling. He even admits that the 76m US stuff isn't too accurate (which probably explains the low price). Anyway, he's made a believer out of me.And I may be a cheapskate, but Justin has over $50 of mine that he never had when I owned FS2002. (I am very tempted to go Galaxy with Justin, however, it's much harder to hide $100.00 or $150.00 a pop from the marital unit then a 20 here and a 10 there....) ;-)
September 13, 200322 yr >Where I come from that is called being a cheapskate --no offense >intended. Before ya get upset, please read the rest of this missive.Where I come from that's being called frugal! I'm retired and have only so much extra cash to invest in hobbies like flight simulator. September 13, 200322 yr Hey NorthTexas, ya don't have a corner on the retirement business. In the same position myself. Just have to pick and choose the folks I donate my limited funds to.Frugal or cheapskate -- it makes little difference. It's just a label. The outcome is the same. I've been called both, but in my best economic posture(copied from the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz), I reply: "After a long and exhaustive research study, I'm just making the most intelligent use of my discretionary funds."They usually go away muttering under their breath.--------------Racartronit means something, but I just can't remember what---------------PS: You did read the rest of my post -- right?PPS: I lived in Houston for several years back in the 80's. Had a daughter graduate from Texas A&M. Miss the unique perspective Texans have on life.
