October 24, 201015 yr Hey There, quick question.... I have been following proper engine procedures (RPM 98%, EGT Below limit) during climb, but I am noticing a very low climb rate. I usually stop my takeoff acceleration at around 170kts and climb at that speed until around 20,000ft. My climb rate slows to around 500ft/min at around 13000ft. Should I be accelerating to a higher climb speed or is this low climb rate normal? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. ThanksKen ConnorsForgot to mention that my climb rate only gets lower as I climb higher. Thanks againKen Connors
October 24, 201015 yr Na, 170kts is the correct climb speed. If you have engine anti-ice on and conditions are right, climbrates may drop down that much. Turn off EAI when out of icing conditions to regain some ressources. You also can increase RPM to 99-100% and return to 98% on cruise level. Regards. Matthias Hanel MilViz Beta Team
October 24, 201015 yr Once ATC told me to climb to FL160 and I noticed extremly low climb rate above FL150. So I assumed that 150 was planes max because it really felt going past that the plane struggled.
October 24, 201015 yr No..I usually cruise around FL200, ceiling is FL250. Compared to a jet, climb rates are slow of course. As I said, turn off EAI if not needed and rise RPM if you like to increase you climbspeed. Regards. Matthias Hanel MilViz Beta Team
October 24, 201015 yr Commercial Member Really important! On the right hand side of the overhead, there is open cowling [i think its been a while since i flew her] flaps, make sure they are on open and not auto to be sure,, this will give you more area to move the throttles without going into the dash marks!was my most important discovery and helps with the climb so so much Alex Ridge Join Fswakevortex here! October 24, 201015 yr If you are heavy and it is a little warm out then 15000 might be all you are going to get. You can use 100% torque all the way too as an option. Dan Downs KCRP
October 25, 201015 yr Author thanks for all the advice. Just completed a trip using the advice given, and it worked out much better this time. Thanks againKen Connors
October 25, 201015 yr Once you reach Mach .35, you should continue your climb at that speed (AOM chapter 4, page 78). That will help your climb performance some.
