FS9 Quits to Desktop...Am I alone?

Featured Replies

Been having random quits to desktop with FS9 w/XP Pro. I haven't seen any talk of this in the forums...Just wondering if anybody else is experiencing similar problems.

I've never had it bomb out to the desk top while I'm in the sim, full screen. I've had it unload on me if I've task switched numerous times during a flight...and try to go back in one too many times by clicking the minimized button on the bottom of the toolbar. FS2002 has done that too, and it's my nasty habit of web surfing while flying...My task switching certainly stresses out MSFS as I expect it would. I can fly for hours and hours if I stay within the sim. My suggestions, because I think what I've seen is somewhat related, are to check, double-check, and triple check your system for any application that loads at startup. Make sure your computer is kept well-cooled. Make sure it's scanned for Adware and Spyware, and use both Spybot and Adaware for the scans. Scan for viruses. Last, get your drivers current, make sure XP is current on service packs, etc....To give you an idea of how important the last statement is--we remotely deployed SP 4 to the Win 2000 workstations on my WAN. A few installations failed. We'd get DW errors trying to manually apply SP 4. The solution? We reapplied SP 3 on the workstations then tried SP 4--worked like a charm. Even XP and 2000 aren't bulletproof, and odd things happen when they've been hit with a '45 :)

Yes! Stanps. seriously, I'm not experiencing this. Hope the forum gives you an answer.

Check your graphic card for overheating. I had something like that a few weeks ago--cooling fan on the card had failed and I did not realize it. When the card overheated, crash to desktop. Finally shut down the computer into a reboot. THAT got me looking hard, found the card was too hot to touch. Solution--new card, old one (GF2 GTS) was fried. HTH,Paul

Hi,I get exactly the same problem.I've been running fs9 with PSSA332 add-on successfully for months, been across lot's of other problems (autogen memory leak : resolved, slow FPS : resolved, slow ATC voice : resolved). And suddenly, this problem appeared, something like one week ago. No change of configuration, FS9 reinstalled, i still have the problem. What makes me think it's not hardware related is that the plane crash always at the same point on the route.IE, When I fly LFMN -> LFPG (with FS9 generated FPLN or FSNAV generated one), the game will quit to desktop always when flying over OKTET waypoint. Always there. I tried LFMN -> LSZH, just to see, and the route is quite similar. Guess what, after passing BARSO, it crashes near OKTET. I still didn't try other route, but i think it may be map or weather related problem. I always use real jeppesen downloaded STATIC weather. I will give a try soon without any weather (empty meteo), then let u know.As it was working before without any problem, and using the same config and flight plan, problem may be due to external source : -new running background process that makes the game crash ? I will try the "EndItAll" freeware (try to guess what it does..) then let know. May be surprising however. Box is quite clean, firewalled, virus free, no crowdy process running.-problem with some windowsupdate ?- Downloaded Jeppesen meteo that may be newly buggy since some days, and makes the game crash at a specific point of map ? Or problem with FSUIPC weather interaction ? I didn't change my FSUIPC3.11 registered settings since a while, and the box "don't interract with FS9 weather" is checked. For info, I get Three events in evetvwr at the crash moment : They both contains empty source, no .exe or .dll info. Hard to start investigating :(. The two first events contains the same hexdump. The last one contains a different dump.May you check your eventvwr after "crash to desktop" and let me know if you got similar stuff in it ?BTW my config is : athlon2700xp, A7V8X, 1gb, win2000 pro, radeon9700pro.Running FS9, PSSA330, FSNav, some PAI traffic, no added scenery, no added meshes.

I think i can help you...These days, the seasonal change takes place within FS i.e. the transition between fall and winter textures. Apparently this transition has not been implemented all to well and as a result it introduces an element of instability in the simulator. This is demonstrated in particular when FS tries to load textures for cerain scenery add ons. E.g. I've had this crash to desktop whenever I tried to load Sion (LSGS)from the freeware Swiss scenery collection and I heard that a Georender airport also suffers from this. My solution was to move FS time ahead a couple of weeks. Give it a try! With kindest regards,

Damn. funny !I will give it a try and let u know. If the problem disappear with season==summer (for example), I will post the problem to Microsoft support. Because this may affect a lot of people.See ya.

I have started getting this problem lately. Once in the sim, its pretty stable, however, loading weather seems to cause problems for me. If I go into the Weather screen from the Create a Flight screen, it will fire off the download ok, load the data into FS and then the moment it tries to open the little weather map window, it`ll crash cleanly back to the desktop. This sometimes happens if I go into the weather screen from within the sim, but very rarely. Also, once I have managed to get the weather ok the first time, subsequent attempts to load the weather from the Create a Flight screen then work fine.My system is Soltek Sl75FRn2 Mobo, athlon xp 2400, 768meg pc2100, geforce 4 ti4200 and SB audigy. Win xp pro sp1 The two addons which I installed about the time my problems began are Georender 6 and FSUIPC (updated to version 3.12). I am reluctant to blame FSUIPC because I have had years of flawless use from various versions of it (I wish I had UAT staff like Pete Dowson at work!). Georender is more unknown. My only other experience of Richard Goldstein`s work was Flying M for Fs2k and that caused no problems. However, it didn`t have the fancy (if a little too loud) Lago soundscape thingy on it.I can sense yet another install of Windows coming on, despite the untold grief and pain of begging for unlocks from payware vendors..CheersLungs

>I am reluctant to blame FSUIPC because You can be reluctant to blame GEORENDER as well. I don't run it and i have the problem, too.

No you are not alone, there are lots of other messages in the forum. My solution (at least until it does not work) was to get rid of the terrain background to the weather map, gps and the map view. My crashes always occur when any of these are activated with terrain showing. So far, touchwood, I have not experienced any more crashes or sudden dumping back to desktop.Colin

Hi ColinThat`s a really interesting point about the terrain background view, because I have had 1 or 2 crashes caused by the map view too.I`ll try out your idea about switching the terrain off.Thankx m8Lungs

Nooon,Did you try the change of date/season? I am interested to hear if it has fixed it for you.Kind regards,

Have any of you installed new AFCAD2 files recently (ie just before your FS2004 software started crashing?)I had similar problems in weather view where it crashed to desktop as I tried to load the weather into the sim. I then realised that the AFCAD updates I had installed for FS2004 and UK 2000 scenery were causing the crash (due to similar messages on the UK2000 forum). Worth checking and temporarily removing any new AFCAD2 or scenery you may have installed just prior to your crashes.Hope this helpsRegardsAdam Moore

Vassilis,I will this night, I am at work right now. I will update in the night (GMT+1 here).Adam,I did install AFCAD2, but standalonely, i didn't modified anything in FS9 yet with this tool.see you.

Wow! Glad I'm not the only one. I too have been experiencing randown CTD's. I'll be flying along and bam! instantly I'm back to desktop. this started to occur about a week ago.At first I thought maybe it was due to my overclocking, but I did some testing and I'm prime stable and memtest stable. My temps are also stable 31c idle 45c load. So just for giggles I turned my fsb back to stock and I still get the random reboots.I'm running Wxre-thought there might be an issue with that, but scouring the forums here n there I haven't seen anyone with a Wxre issue like this. I am also using AFCADS but am only using the pai certified ones.I'm stumped for sure. Hope we can get to the bottom of this-soon. And sure would be nice if MS released a patch for the isuues that are already known i.e the time zone and seasonal changes.Andy
