November 24, 201015 yr hello, since its getting colder everyday, i would like to know if there is any ice simulation in the md11 (wings, engine...) (i mean system simulation, not visual...) thank you Michael Knittl best regards, Michael K N I T T L PC Specs: i7950@4ghz, ASUS PTV2 Deluxe, nVidia GTX580, 12GB DD3 1600 Corsair Controls: Saitek Yoke & Rudder Pedals, TackIR5

November 24, 201015 yr Really? I mean I never tried it, but I doubt that icing really affects the aircraft (apart from fuel temperature). "A life is like a garden. November 24, 201015 yr Hello,it seems like its not modeled. I am currently flying at FL320 with no Anti-Ice engaged while the TAT shows -27C (ASE shows -38C). If i turn it on it says "no ice detected". Luis Massas
November 24, 201015 yr Commercial Member Ice doesn't just spontaneously appear. You need to be in visible moisture and have temps below 8C. At FL320 you generally don't run into icing that much. It's more of a departure/approach-phase issue. Kyle Rodgers
November 25, 201015 yr You need to be flying in cloud for an extended period for enough Ice to form to affect your aircraft. Im not a 100% sure whats modeled on the MD-11 as ive not been flying it long but I do know regional jets are more prone to Ice build up as they usualy fly at lower altitudes where there is more chance of being in cloud.Andrew Simmons Andrew Simmons Intel i7 950+Corsair H70. 6 Gig ram Kingston Hyperx 1600Mhz ASUS GTX560 Ti (900mhz core/1800Shader/2100Memory) 1T Cavier Black HD + 1T Cavier Green for backup jobs. November 25, 201015 yr I don't believe it's modeled. I've never gotten any icing warning in the MD-11. Even in the JS41, I think it's just a visual effect. At least I haven't noticed the ice to affect flight characteristics. It's probably something that is difficult to simulate correctly in FSX.

But icing doesn't affect handling and aerodynamics of the aircraft. I think there was an aircraft, that tried to simulate icing effects through custom coding, but I can't remember which one. November 25, 201015 yr At our company we use TAT tempeture of -10 to +10 in visible moisture,ie clouds, overcast layers, or snow for engine heat maintaining a 55% N1. When you get low and slow then throw on wing heat. In fs9 I use these procedures and it works fine . Hope this helps.Shannon Stewert

If i turn it on it says "no ice detected". Luis MassasJust to answer a few of your questions - At -27c you wont get icing even in the real world, the temp is too low for ice to form. In order to get Ice in FS you have to be flying within the correct temp range with moisture in the air (Thunderstorms are a good example) you also need Active sky and fsuipc to have it modeled, Active sky increases the gross weight of the aircraft as ice builds on the wings this results in the aircraft having a lower stall speed, it's crude but it's better then nothing.Regards Rob Prest

Thanks for the FSUIPC info though. Wasn't aware of that. Pretty neat. "A life is like a garden.
