January 30, 201115 yr Hi, I wonder if anyone with access to, or familiarity with, an Aspen EFD 1000/500 flight display can help me find an answer to this question:"Is changing the range on the MFD map a one button push, or a two step process?"From the Aspen manuals, it would appear that in the default situation, the MFD map has "FOCUS" and that the Range buttons are active and can be pushed to change the MAP Range.A simulation gauge I am testing at present, requires me to first push the Right Selector Button to bring the MAP into FOCUS and then activate the Range button. After 10 sec, the MAP loses FOCUS again.I have a sense that this is not how the real gauge operates, but would really like some feedback from someone with RW experience! Bert
January 30, 201115 yr Moderator Bert,From the manual section 2.2.5: 2.2.5. Map Range KeyWhen the MAP is enabled, the RNG (Range) key is used to zoom in or out in scale to display more or less of the map. Range can be adjusted from 2.5 to 200 nautical miles. Press the top or (+) part of the RNG key to increase map range. Press the bottom or (-) part of the RNG key to decrease map range.Previously, in section 2.2.3.:2.2.3 Hot KeysHot Key functions are accessible anytime, except when the Menu is active.I find nothing in the manual that would indicate that the "focus" changes with inactivity, or reverts to some "unfocused" state, which leads me to believe that the last Hot Key function chosen remains in "focus."Whereas both the left and right knobs are explicitly described as having a "home position" to which they will revert after 10 seconds of inactivity: Left-CRS, Right-HDG.Scanning the entire manual for the keyword "seconds" reveals nothing with regards to the Hot Keys... January 30, 201115 yr Author I find nothing in the manual that would indicate that the "focus" changes with inactivity, or reverts to some "unfocused" state, which leads me to believe that the last Hot Key function chosen remains in "focus."Hi Bill, yes I feel the same way - and frankly, it would make no sense from a pilot's perspectiveto make a simple action like zooming in or out on the map, a two-step procedure...Now I need someone with access to the real unit to confirm this.. :( Bert

January 31, 201115 yr Moderator Now I need someone with access to the real unit to confirm this.. :(I have a client for whom I'm building a panel/gauge system, which includes an Aspen EDM1000. I'd ask him, but it might take a long time to get an answer. Apparently he's in no great rush... Fr. January 31, 201115 yr Author I have a client for whom I'm building a panel/gauge system, which includes an Aspen EDM1000. I'd ask him, but it might take a long time to get an answer. Apparently he's in no great rush...Having read and re-read the manual, and watched the Aspen video, it appears to me that the hot keys on the rightas well as the range keys are active at all times, at least in the main map view, and that the map has a thin magenta border to show that it is "selected".When you push the lower right knob, a thicker magenta border appears which indicates that you can change the map view by rotating the knob. After 10 sec the thicker border disappears again. Bert
February 2, 201115 yr One of the piper arrows I fly has the Aspen glass. The + and - buttons do the zoom for you as I recall, so one push does it. The aspen is very nice and makes all the conventional gauges around it more like stand-by. But it's very...small... Its size is both a great sales booster and a limitation. Its size is both a great sales booster and a limitation.Of course it's small. After all, it was designed to "fit" into the same space as two 2.5" instruments without having to cut or modify the panel... :( Fr. February 5, 201115 yr To answer the OPs question, the range keys will change the range on the map regardless of what the other soft keys are doing. Joe Sherrill
