Piston Engines will not start

Featured Replies

Help:I normally fly small jets and turbines and I have no problems. The other day I went to fly a Piston engine aircraft to do some low and slow flights and the engine would not start. It turns over but will not catch. I tried a number of my piston engine aircraft and none would start yet if I load a turbine right after trying one it starts up with no problem. I have never had this problem before and I have not added any aircraft or any other addons to my setup in months.Has anyone had this problem or know of a possible fix for it?ThanksRichardS

Two questions:1. Which piston a/c are you trying to start ?2. How are you trying to start the engine(s) ?I only fly piston a/c, so I don't know how it is with jets, but some of the piston addons these days are quite complex (aka realistic) to start.

Try moving your mixture levers to full rich.

Lose not thine airspeed, lest the ground rise up and smite thee.

Pick an airfield, load the MS default Cessna 172, hit Ctrl-E to start it, then shut it down - battery off, mixture pulled, radios off, then save it as the default flight. Restart the sim. (Depending upon the next piston aircraft - it might not have a radio master, so you might have to save it with the radios on). When an aircraft is selected it uses some parameters from the default flight, and if you've changed that for whatever reason - you might have issues such as you describe. If that doesn't fix it - cut n paste the fsx.cfg and then start the sim. It will make a new fsx.cfg.

Sorry I'm just getting back to the site.I did try with the 172 and it wouldn't run either. I didn't try from the saved flights through so I might have to do it that way. It just seems strange that this has never happened before and now none of my piston aircraft(single or multiple engine) will run. My normal screen opening aircraft is the Beech king air which is a turboprop so I may have to change to the 172. I'll try that.ThanksRichardS

I had this happen as well. Load up the default trike, start the engine (cntr-e), save the flight AND MAKE IT THE DEFAULT FLIGHT.That worked for me.Also, have you tried deleting your FSX cfg and let it build a new one. This should also correct the issue.

While flying the B-17 Flying Fortress, what I'd like to do would be to completely shut the default DC-3 into a complete "cold and dark" situation; magnetos off, batteries off, mixtures off, but with cowl flaps all the way open. Then, like all above save these to the default flight. Dave.

I tried deleting the CFG. All that did was change my video settings and make me have to ok any none FSX aircraft. Using the 172 as the default startup didn't help either. As soon as FSX loads the aircraft, it shuts down and will not start. I also tried the Trike with no luck either. Each time a piston failed I would load a turbine and it would start with no problem. Piston(NG), turbine(G), piston(NG), turbine(G). I spend hours trying aircraft after aircraft of both types and got the same thing over and over. All the turbines started and all the pistons failed.I can't figure out what is not turned on to keep the pistons from starting. I tried with the fuel pumps on and off. They should start with just cntl + E but no go, but the turbines start fine that way. I guess I have lost the use of all my piston engined aircraft. Thankfully I have lots of turbines and jets that work just fine.RichardS

Have you tried changing your game settings? Realism slider,Auto mixture on/off? Might be worth a shot.
