Deferred Procedure calls?

Featured Replies

Hello Tech peoples.I have a problem with my PC.After startup its fine for a few minutes. After this time however it becomes very laggy ,my mouse pointer will stick and jerk on-screeen ,trying to type (in this forum for instance) each character can take a second or so to display (very irritating) and also if my e-mail indicator should sound at this point (default FS9 e-mail sound ) the sound is very crackly ,it sounds as though its struggling to get through. After five minutes or so this condition resolves itself and my PC is functioning normally again.I have traced the cause of this problem to Deferred procedure calls. In the stuttery, laggy phase these DPCs are using between seventy and even up to hundred percent of the CPUs resources. As I mentioned before after some minutes the PC is back to normal (smooth) operation and these DPCs are now only using forty, twenty and less of the CPUs resources. Can somebody explain what exactly DPCs are doing and why this occurs please .Cheers Andy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deferred_Procedure_Call  But it´s too technical for me to fully grasp. What I can boil your problem down to (tech wizards, laugh it up  ), is that a bad driver is clogging your system slow operation on a memory buffer. So installed new driver recently?Bjorn

Thanks Bjorn.I checked out that link ,and I have to say that as usual the explanation provided was about as clear mud .However I did notice something about sound issues .I have been having sound troubles recently and I am not entirely happy that my (very old) soundblaster external live24 has got the correct driver.I downloaded what i THOUGHT was the right one ,but I just don't no.Anyway my DPC problem is not a massive one (compared with some of the horrors I have experienced with my PC ).On the other hand a solution would be nice.cheers Andy

Hi Andy,When I've built my new rig few weeks ago I had serious DPC issues too. They are very difficult to cure as no tool is able to say exactly where the problem comes from but you can alreday check the intesity and frequency of the "micro-pauses" using this tool. They are 80% of the time drivers issues but in my case it was due to problems with my mobo's Marvell connector.

Just a thought, but when is the last time you scanned for viruses? When is the last time that you deleted your internet browser's temp file?Have you looked at your msconfig startup lately, you maybe loading a hole lot of crap in the back round that you do not need when you PC first turns on that that alone can cause serious lag issues.

I use System Mechanic to keep my rig fit, works well, cleans out all the garbage and can tune this and that.B

Hello DavidI am having problems as i type this (Delayed appearance of characters, and sticking mouse pointer) It should settle after a few minutes.I will download the tool from the link you provided (and enjoy getting EVEN more confused)However!!at least there will be some pretty and almost certainly meaningless(to me) graphics to look at.biggrin.gifAS i finish this the PC has now returned to normal, so the laggy periods are not long in duration.cheers Andy

High there. Thanks for your reply. I am always scanning for viruses and running various apps that are supposed to check for malware, spyware etc and I do use msconfig to select my startups as well.I think most simmers are pretty on the ball when it comes to keeping a PC running smoothly (always chasing those framerates and trying to keep those stutters at a minimum)PS I always feel a little cheated when i run a full virus check that can sometimes take hours and it finds nothing.
