March 7, 201115 yr Hi,How many cores does FSX utilise properly?Im just wondering whether to get an i3 and overclock it to approx 4.6ghz, get an i5 760 quad and overclock it to about 4.2ghz or to get the latest sandy bridge 2500k and overclock that to 4.8ishI know the sandy bridge will be fastest but will FSX really run that much faster using the 2500k than the i3 if the same graphics card is used? Surely 4.6ghz is going to be faster than the 4.2ghz i5 750?Just wondering as going the i3 route will save me quite a bit of money in the build.Matt
March 7, 201115 yr No point in getting anything else today than 2500K (for FSX).See here:https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AuiXjW8fJyDrdC1KZm5fSlJYdnJBaXRRclFuU0U3WUE&hl=en&authkey=CMSSocoI#gid=0

March 7, 201115 yr Word Not Allowed,You mean 2600K and a GTX580 combination?I noticed a 980x clocked at just under 4ghz. Can that be the cause of only 22fps min vs 30fps with a 2600K?I was thinking of dropping a 990x into my motherboard and OC to 5ghz. I wonder if I would still need a gtx 580? MSFS

EDIT: I forgot, the GPU is also the cause of the poor FPS.

Everyone usually has HT off, why would one get 100€ more expensive CPU, just to turn THAT feat off? GTX580 rocks of course...Oh I can believe that 980x can't pull much more, I think those extra FPS are solely on the GPU... I think with the GTX285, that 980x would be pulling very similar frames to my machine. 4 or 6 cores don't do squawt for FPS as you know...I can't decide right now if a 2500K should be a way or GTX580. Both are very expensive ways, and both: well, don't know yet, it's a heavy financial hit right now.

If you want or need HT the spend the extra $100. If you dont, then dont! March 7, 201115 yr Let me first apologize to the OP for using his thread.Alain,Here are my two options:Upgrade chip to a 990x with a good cooler. I want at least 5gz. What "air" cooler do you recommend and how high can I go? What ram do I need? 1600 at 7-7-24 might not cut it. Plus, I might add a gtx 580.ORGet a 2600K with Asus V3 board. What ram & cooler do you recommend. I want to reach 5ghz.I might not need the gtx 580. But, if I need it I'll get it!BTW: I do music video editing so I need all the cores available. Thanks,Jose MSFS
March 7, 201115 yr 5GHz on air with a 2600K is a gamble5GHz on air with a Gulftown is a pipedream. You're probably not going to make it with neither of them (and it doesn't really matter anyway)

If you want to stay on air on both CPU get this CPU cooler, that's the one I have and I've never looked back, that's the same cooler used in the vid. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16835608018
March 7, 201115 yr Hi Jose,How are you doing old friend? You never asked me but I will give you my opinion anyway from direct observation. Go with the i7 2600K and the 580 GTX. Both are top dogs for FSX in my experience so you will never be sorry because of the extreme performance. In my opinion the i7 Gulftowns are not even remotely worth the substantial extra costs of the GPU and necessary accompanying system infrastucture in order to gain any preceived FSX performance enhancement, notwithstanding Alain's death-defying superduper out-performing monstermash! The money you save will more than buy you a couple GTX 580s in case MS Flight likes SLI. Kind regards,
March 8, 201115 yr , notwithstanding Alain's death-defying superduper out-performing monstermash! Kind regards,LOL , Stephen....you always make me laugh.....I've reused some part from this PC....
March 8, 201115 yr Gentlemen,Thanks for you insightful insights.Stephen,I thought you'd be somewhere on vacation. You've worked very hard my friend!Alain,That's a great cooler! I happen to think that size does matter.Last question:Can I get to 5ghz with the 2600K and my 1600 (7-7-7-24)or do I need a pair of Redlines? The reason why I'm leaning toward the 990x is because, I would not have to do anything but sway a chip. I can test with my gtx 480 and if I need the gtx 580, I can order after run some tests. Plus, the 990x has more cores which will help with Vegas video rendering & Pro Show. Thanks again!Jose MSFS
March 8, 201115 yr No, your rams are DDR3 triple chanels, you'll need DDR3 double chanels. You "wanna" play.... make sure the board can take them...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231420The 2133MHz rams will shine with a high overclock for sure.
