March 23, 201115 yr Hey guys, my co-worker who owns an ATI4870X2 video card wants to trade it for my Geforce 9600GSO...reason is that he says it uses too much power and he wants to get rid of it, with 2GB of video memory vs 768mb in mine i would take it but ive used 2 ATIs (dont remember which they were) in the past and i didn't like them because they always had problems with flightsim, for example they never could render haze and fog properly, i know nothing of this VC so what do you guys think, should i trade, or stick to good old faithful Nvidia? March 23, 201115 yr Nvidia all the way! :-)Now, now dont be hating on ATI, I currently have the ATI AMD Radeon HD 6570, and compared to my last GTX 470, ATI creamed. It's much cheeper and can run faster then most high end Nvidia products, I use it with all my PMDG planes and REX and it runs at FPS 35 most of the time, amazingly... March 23, 201115 yr Is your 9600 GSO based on the G92 or the newer G94 GPU? Either way. Go ahead with the trade! The 4870X2 is definitely superior on all counts. "A life is like a garden. March 23, 201115 yr Commercial Member Keep in mind here that FSX doesn't benefit from dual-GPU stuff. You're basically trading for a single 4870 as far as FSX goes. I had a 4870 three cards ago - it's definitely not a current generation card. You're also losing the combined mode AA stuff you can do with the Nvidia card, FSX will look worse on the 4870 for sure.If you play other games besides FS, I'd be more inclined to go for it - the 4870X2 will crush the 9600GSO in GPU-limited stuff. March 23, 201115 yr You're also losing the combined mode AA stuff you can do with the Nvidia card, FSX will look worse on the 4870 for sure. How much worse exactly? Isn't the combined mode AA only a performance advantage? ATI cards support up to 24x samples AA. I am sure that's good enough. "A life is like a garden. March 23, 201115 yr About three years ago I built an FSX rig based around an AMD Phenom CPU and a 4870X2 and a 4870.Never again. The Phenom 955 chip was bad, but the ATI 4870x2 was dreadful. Rarely got over 20FPS, and the 30+ amps the card used was absurd. There was some problem in the way the 4xxx generation ATi cards rendered clouds in FSX, and the card we are discussing returned between 5-8fps while flying in anything beyond 4/8 cover on my rig.I cannot emphasise enough just how bad this card is / was for FSX. Allegedly ATi resolved the rendering issues in subsequent 5xxx series cards, but then and there I swore off ATi (and AMD - their 955 quad core was rubbish) for ever.Have been running FSX on an Intel i7 920 , o/c'ed to 3.8ghz, and a relatively old-hat nVidia 275 since then, with superb results. The GTX275 drives two monitors for the VC and undocked items and, and a 9600GT does a single monitor for the overhead. For FSX, use and Intel CPU and an nVidia card, every time.PS - I just remembered the noise levels the 4870X2 gave off ! As hot and loud as a hairdryer, and as much use for flight simming. Once again - avoid !!! Stephen Kennedy-Joneshttps://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2018-7259
March 23, 201115 yr Author Thanks for the great advice guys, just the answers i've been looking for, seeing that i barely use my computer for anything other than FS, ill turn down the trade. Thanks again. Bryan Richards "People depend so much on automation that they forget how to get the automation to work." B.W.
March 24, 201115 yr Other then novelty value, I wouldn't bother. $150 or less will get you a budget current generation, or middle of the road last generation card that will blow both options completly out of sight. Paul Smith.
