You know, that's probably the problem of your ear...During your flight, when the pressure in your ear differed from that in the cabin, your hearing ability was reduced, so engine sound faded out. Later, you swallowed something or for some reason you equalized the pressure, the sound came back. That happened to me all the time during climb and descent.

Hey Peter! I had the same problem a few months ago... Drove me nuts... The sound wouldn't cut completely out, it would just fade to a softer volume.... then unexpectedly come back to full volume. I tried a new soundcard... etc... and what I found that ultimately worked for me was to make sure that in the FSX sound settings, the "VOICE" is set to use the same device as the other sounds. In my case, I don't use FSX ATC... I'm exclusive to Vatsim via FSInn, so maybe there is a conflict there. That's what worked for me. Cheers!Buddy Morgan

There's a bug in FSX that can remove part or all of the engine sound after you cycle views - just hit Q twice to turn the sound engine on and off and it'll all come back.
