May 24, 201115 yr Hey guys, I need some opinions on what to do - and I will try to make this as short as possible.I have been flight simming since FS98, with most of my hours on FS2000 and 2002. When FS9 came around, my system would not run it and I got out of the hobby. A couple of years ago, my wife and I purchased a new PC and about three months after, it dawned on me that I might be able to run MSFS. I then purchased FSX and gave it a shot for a couple of months. My Gateway from Best Buy ran it OK, but I eventually got tired of the stuttering and sliders to the left (I was flying mostly GA w/ Carenado's Piper Arrow) so I put the joystick back in the closet.Turn the clock up 2 years to present - So after watching "Flying Wild" on Discovery, I decided to fire up FSX again. I updated my NVIDIA drivers and tried to make some changes for better FPS and a more enjoyable experience. I downloaded the PNW demo and have my sliders set to their recommendations for my machine. I am now getting decent frames (avg 17-20) using PNW with sliders about mid-way using default aircraft and no other add-ons. SO, here is where I need some advice. I plan to get back into the hobby and plan to finally get a machine that will run MSFS with great results. BUT, should I wait for MS Flight, or should I go all in with FSX?My current specs are:Core 2 Quad 8200 @ 2.33 gh8 GB RamNVIDIA Ge Force GT120 It seems as if there are some really great add-ons for FSX and a machine that will run it to it's full potential is now somewhat affordable. What do you guys think?
May 25, 201115 yr I'd go with FSX if I were you. Flight is an unknown quantity at the moment, but even if we knew what it was going to be like, rumour has it that it'll be late 2012 before it even shows up (although that is merely a rumour). Nevertheless, I think we can safely assume that if Flight was anywhere really near to a release, we'd have been seeing more previews of it and possibly even a showcase or demo, which we have not, so it could well be a long wait, and we can pretty much say for certain you won't see it this side of Christmas.FSX is ready now, and is fun, it is a mature sim with quite a hefty catalogue of free and pay wares for it. Moreover, there are some fantastic products out just now for it which are really beginning to use it to its potential, for example the very recently released Aerosoft Katana and their Dimona Motor Glider (if you like GA stuff). On the heavy metal side, the iFly 737 is very cool and of course PMDG have their own NG on the way too, which means we have the kind of choice that is often the catalyst for some real advances in what developers can do. Meanwhile, Flight Sim Labs are looking like they will achieve another FS airliner long-held wish, for a realistic FBW Airbus. Of course there are many other cool add-ons coming, such as a de Havilland Comet due out in about a week's time from Just Flight, plus there are a huge amount of other cool things to be had as well, for example, very many really realistic classic warbirds from A2A such as the B-17 and the Spitfire, and A2A are continuing to push the boundaries as well, with an F-104 and an F-4 Phantom among several realistic aircraft they have in the pipeline. For a long time, flight simming was a bit in the doldrums, but it really seems like its getting a lot of life breathed back into it of late, helped by the fact that PCs can run FSX very well now, so you picked a great time to rekindle your interest, and if you want all the hot new stuff, then its FSX that is where it is at, and it's likely to remain that way for quite some time.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
May 25, 201115 yr Moderator I'd have to agree wiht what Al said.If I were you I would start enjoying what is available now since we have no idea what tomorrow might bring. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
May 25, 201115 yr If you are into the quality add-ons and looking at FS now then I would go for FSX. Sure you could wait for Flight, but once it is out you need to wait for the Devs to start producing for it. The quality stuff will be years down the line.....As well as those Al has mentioned there is the likes of the RealAir Duke(s) and Eaglesoft Citation X. Plus all the quality scenery that is about.G Gary Davies aka "Gazzareth" Simming since 747 on the Acorn Electron
