June 6, 201114 yr Hi!I am about to buy a new computer and I intend to continue using my good old FS9 (FS2004),so, I wonder if FS2004 is fully compatible with DirectX 11 and today's video cards (ATI and GeForce)and Windows 7 with all it entails.Grateful for help and tips. Thanks!Hans HermanssonSweden
June 6, 201114 yr Hi,DX9 is included with Win 7.FS9 will not touch DX10 or 11.Everything will run fine as long as you don't instll FS into the Program Files folder!
June 6, 201114 yr Hi,DX9 is included with Win 7.FS9 will not touch DX10 or 11.Everything will run fine as long as you don't instll FS into the Program Files folder!DirectX versions are not upgrades of the previous one...they all coexist on the machine, and the program uses the version that's appropriate for it. All current-production NV/ATI video cards support DX9, so no worries. And to add to what Jim says...do not install FS9 (or FSX) into ANY folder whose name begins with "Program Files", i.e. Program Files(x86). Install it into something like "C:\FS9"--Windows Vista and Win 7 do some special things in the name of security with any folder that starts with "Program Files" and those security measures cause major headaches with lots of FS add-ons. June 8, 201114 yr Hi again!and thanks a lot for reply/advice!/HansHi again!and thanks a lot for advice/reply!/HansI agree with the advice plus if I were doing a clean install I would do this with all installations. Instead of left clicking to activate install, right click on it and you will get a dialogue that allows you to "install as administrator." In some cases it won't do anything but in others it will give far better FPS and avoid issues. I really wish I had known this last year when I got my new computer.I would also recommend getting a dual hard drive and installing FS9 on its own drive. That will also enhance performanceHave fun - once it's all up and running it will seem like a whole new simulation...BTW, there are a few odd things you may encounter from Win7 but so far nothing serious for me with any of my addonsCheersIan
June 8, 201114 yr I have FS9 installed in the Program Files(x86) folder on Windows 7, under BootCamp on an Apple Mac Pro, with zero issues, with all the major add-ons you're likely to use.The great thing about FS9, is that you can run it fully maxed out including 100% traffic on just about any modern, multi-core system. I have FSX, but it still hasn't fully convinced me to switch completely yet.

HelloTrust us on this one, one day you will install an addon that has issues with running from Program Files(x86) and their output being diverted to the virtual store instead of where the are programmed to write too, FScommander being one such application.Read this post by the developer for more info on why it is a bad idea.http://forum.simflight.com/topic/66198-vista-and-windows-7-users-please-read/Folk are not just blowing smoke when they advise against installing there, they are speaking from experience.

Guess I am just lucky :(HelloXP 64 or 32 does not have this issue , only Vista and W7 have the extra protection over Program Files(x86)Nor does XP do the redirection to the virtual store in the way Vista/W7 doSee this from the dev of FScommander, explains it quite plainly." For applications installed under C:\Program Files which generate files for the outside world (= other applications), Vista and Windows 7 place these file into a virtual store which other applications may know nothing about. Consequently, the other applications may look for these files in a specific folder which, however, does not contain the expected file."Now you can be very happy you are running XP64 as you will miss out on all of this nonsense from MS
