July 28, 201114 yr Dear PMDG, I would like to know if you are able to tell us if we are going to have to install the new addon with anti-virus protections switched off ! Sound slighty daft but a few of my old addons required this, as there were a fair amount of gauges which with it on use to corrupt on download and installation,. Many thanks Steve
July 28, 201114 yr I'm sure that depends on what draconian AV software you're using. This begs to start the conversation: Eset Nod was the best antivirus I've ever used up until Security Essentials' (SE) recent launch in the past few years. It caught it's first drive by download the other day on Grooveshark. Small footprint, effective, and very fast quick scan. Not to mention SE doesn't screw with installations and if/when I uninstall it, it will let me do so. *Cough* Norton *Cough* McAfee Did I mention SE is free? ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
July 28, 201114 yr Yeah AVG is pretty irritating. I'd disable it on most of your trusted installs. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
July 28, 201114 yr Commercial Member We have no requirements to disable anti-virus, UAC, use a specific browser to download or anything like that. Our recommendation is not to use overly bloated and absurdly overly protective Antivirus software like Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky etc... We all use the free Microsoft Security Essentials app here - it is great and very lightweight - doesn't hurt performance on a gaming/simming machine. It has scored as good or better than any payware AV solution in independent detection testing. Google it. An overly restrictive firewall that stops the activation connection from proceeding can also cause problems - watch for that too. July 29, 201114 yr What about Trend Micro? It seems to work well and isn't "bloated" as some other AV packages may be. I haven't noticed any drop in performance either Craig Totenhofer - YMIA FSX PC Win7 Ultimate x64 | i7 980x @3.33GHz | EVGA X58 Classified 3 | Corsair 6GB DDR3 Tripple kit | AMD5870 (Waiting for Nvidia 600 series) | OCZ 240GB IBIS SSD! | 2x WD 1TB Black HDD | Corsair H-50 CPU cooler (Replacing with custom WC loop) Lian-Li PC-50 RSE Case | Corsair AX-1200W Software REX2.0 HD | ORBX AU SP4, YMML & YSCH | PMDG j41 & 737NGX | RealAir Duke Bojotes .CFG tweak & Shader 3.0 mod | ENBseries
July 29, 201114 yr Commercial Member I've seen problems with Trend Micro being overly aggressive at support. Installer fails, gauges blank, stuff like that. My personal feeling is that there's no reason to use anything other than MSSE - it is one of the best apps MS has ever made and it's free. A super big key thing with any AV program too is to exclude your FSX folder from the realtime scanner - that's behind a ton of problems. It "analyzes" something in the FS code and thinks it sees a "threat" and shuts down the whole process. Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com

July 29, 201114 yr Commercial Member I don't use AV - they're junk. Best regards,Robin. Not a very smart move - there's certainly ways to get infected through unpatched OS/browser/etc exploits through no fault of your own. MSSE has saved me several times and I'm a pretty careful user. Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com

Even with my no-script addon I've picked up several drive-bys in the past few years. My PC has never, however, gotten infected. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules

I thought I was pretty net-smart and I got nailed with one of those malware phony antiviruses. ALWAYS run some sort of AV. July 29, 201114 yr Commercial Member Some folks don't take privacy or financial security seriously. It is precisely because I take it seriously that I don't run them. They provide nothing but a false sense of security. I've written some pretty funky software that does stuff apps aren't supposed to do, yet all the AV apps I put it against failed to detect any problems!! I had only modified a core and security-sensitive part of the OS!! It caught it's first drive by download the other day on Grooveshark. Is Grooveshark a legitimate or pirate site? Best regards,Robin.
