Time to switch to FSX?

Featured Replies

With my new system (i7-2600k, GTX 570, Win 7 8Gb RAM) and the release of PMDG's 737NGX, I might consider moving. In fact, I realize that I fly only the Level-d 767, the Maddog and the IFly 737. These all exist for FSX.Regarding sceneries, they also for most all exist under FSX.You who are using FSX, I guess you will comfort me in my thinking that it is time to change. However, what are the challenge that I will need to face when it comes to setup, and what will I potentially loose vs FS9 (except for frame rates).ThanksGhiom

I ran FS9 and FSX in tandem until I was certain about the move to FSX. At the time, my machine was marginal and it was a bit touch and go. But as soon as I started using FSX, I never really went back to FS9 again. FSX does ned a lot more tweaking than FS9 did and whilst your system will be fine for FSX, I would suggest that you may still need to overclock the CPU. IAN

Ryzen 5800X3D, Nvidia RTX5080 - 32 Gig DDR4 RAM, 1TB & 2 TB NVME drives - Windows 11 64 bit MSFS 2024 Premium Deluxe Edition Resolution 2560 x 1440 (32 inch curved monitor)

... and if you pop that 2600 up to anywhere over 4.5 gig you will find that - using Nick's or Ryan's Inspector setup, along with Bojote's tweaks - you will have almost no difficulty in flying whatever you want - wherever you want. There are a few cities which will cause dips into the high teens and twenties, but it's barely noticeable. I have a smooth 18 - 30 on the 28R approach to FlightZone02's Portland, using the 2010 Maddog, OrbX's PNW and free Portland City: This is with Aussie weather, 35% AI and 10% road. This would be barely possible with my old 4.4 gig i7-950. The same figures happen with the reverse route into Seattle.

Thanks for your feedback. Will not entertain twi sims in //, that is for sure. It has got to be a radical moove.Adivce for landclass and ground textures (flying in North America)?ThanksGhiom

I bought FSX when it was originally released and hated the performance. When Tahiti X was released, I upgraded my computer. Spent 2 years tweaking and upgrading. I thought I had a good setup with an i7 975 @4 and gtx 480 combo. Then I upgraded to SB 2600K @4.5 and I can now run car traffic and still be in the 20s everywhere. Very impressive boost. FSX now looks and performs the way I want it to.

GEX for North America and the FS Genesis landclass for FS04 that will work great in FSX.

UTX and GEX and REX Overdrive are a must have. If you want the best VFR scenery, look no further than ORBX.

I think my system is similar to your new one, look up ASUS G73JW gaming laptop. It runs FSX really nicely now, especially after trying Bojotes tweak last night. I flew the PMDG737 in and out of Heathrow with Dense autogen and ASE weather and it was almost completely smooth. Much as I enjoyed the relative stability of FS9 and all the scenery I had built up and the wilco737 I am now glad I made the change. But I am going to be a lot more selective about who gets my money from now on though. definatly going for quality not quantity. Time is too short and technology has moved on too far for poor quality scenery and aircraft and effects.

Just a quick note. What to buy for scenery.... depends a lot on where you fly. I have all the GEX and UTX and landclass coming out of my ying-yang after the move to FSX.... but I only fly North America - and there - specifically only the west coast - thanks to OrbX. Their new scenery covers all that you'll ever need, even down to people walking, grass growing, trees moving and so on. Utterly amazing scenery. http://fullterrain.com/product_nablue.html I purchased PNW, then all the airports/flying fields, and now more recently the Northern Rockies, which takes in the Canadian west cost: I'm (we're!!) now waiting for north and south California to complete the north-south routes. PNW fits both VFR and IFR traffic, as the larger airports are beginning to show, and they have produced a good number of small airports and fields, along with the surrounding areas. Also - these guys:- http://www.myflightsimblog.com/MyFlightSimBlog/KSEA.html have done a patch for FlyTampa's KSEA. Portland is done, too, so there's lots available.
