August 16, 201114 yr Ok guys hate to tell you this but the black screens or crashing while doing menu tasks or going to windowed mode is the ENB Series I hated to go down that road but sorry folks ENB does not get along with ENB we need a better version of this or maybe even some payware REX hint hint, I took it out and no problems at all, I miss it big time but hope that can be replaced with a bug free substitute, so anyone who does no believe me try it dump it problems gone, hope this can help anyone experiencing this, any ideas on a version that works with the NGX I am all ears. August 16, 201114 yr Author Hi Zach, I didn't see that post, what are you doing, your not using enb ?So true Derian Rich Sennett
August 16, 201114 yr I learned this the hard way back in May 2010 when I built my current i7 system with W7-64bit. I had a recurring CTD issue where I was in windowed mode during preflight (since I needed to access other apps like TOPCAT, Active Sky Advanced, etc). Once I settled down and was ready to commit to flight (usually after an hour or so), I would go to full screen mode. More often than not, FSX would crash with the mode change. If the crash didn't occur right away, it would after some time if I switched modes enough times. After much troubleshooting, I was able to narrow it down to the ENB mod. Once I removed the two files, I was able to switch between full - windowed mode without abandon and no CTDs. I never had the issue with my previous XP-64 build, but only had it since i changed to w7-64 as the OS. I have heard of others having the same issue with black screens/ctds, and they all appear to have either Vista or W7 64bit. I have tried some fixes (like having ENB default to off, so that mode changes wouldn't trigger a crash, but that didn't work for me), but I have given up on ENB. It's a hack, and it apparently is in conflict with something on my OS or possibly a CFG entry (like highmemfix or affinitymask), but it seems there is no cure unless someone creates a new version of the ENB mod. It's a shame, as I do miss the look, but then I have to tell myself that there are some things that I do not miss about ENB. It does shave a few fps off, and even though it darkens the night sky more realistically, it also darkens the cockpit as well. And the bloom on the horizon is much too bright and glaring, not at all realistic. But again there are ways to minimize those effects in the ENB config file. I guess I'm really still bitter that I can't use ENB.... A.J. Domingo
August 16, 201114 yr I don't use EMB because I can't get more than 4 mins out of a flight, anywhere, any plane or any time of day. Always a CTD. August 16, 201114 yr Hi Zach, I didn't see that post, what are you doing, your not using enb ? So true DerianI figured the posts got lost in all of the traffic. Just wanted to stress you're not alone. But yes sir, unfortunately the ENB Series mod has been completely removed until I can test it on these latest Nvidia drivers. I don't use EMB because I can't get more than 4 mins out of a flight, anywhere, any plane or any time of day. Always a CTD.Yes, that's what we're talking about here. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
August 16, 201114 yr Author A.J. you are spot on pal, it needs some help I am going to post at REX see if Timmy can come up with something payware or not, wont hurt to ask. good post sir Rich Sennett
August 16, 201114 yr This forum has been crazy with traffic since the NGX release. I had no idea it would get this busy, and I'm not complaining either, but it's still nuts. I feel for Tabs and the PMDG crew, having to wade though all these topics, on top of providing support for the other PMDG birds and getting the service pack and 600-700 ready. A.J. Domingo
August 16, 201114 yr Author Ah ok great if your not using it there must be a good reason, thought I had to do a new reinstall 8 hours to do that, I'm all set lol Rich Sennett
August 16, 201114 yr A.J. you are spot on pal, it needs some help I am going to post at REX see if Timmy can come up with something payware or not, wont hurt to ask. good post sir Rich, I was really in despair over my ENB crashes late last year, because it seemed that no one else had the same issue and were ecstatic over the new look it gives FSX. And then in October 2010, finally I found someone with the same frustration, and a few of us had started some intense testing of a supposed fix. Nothing came out of it, if anything the crashes were postponed till later in the FSX session, and at that point it was like a game of russian roulette, in the back of your mind you were thinking there was a 50/50 chance of a CTD just ruining your session. August 16, 201114 yr Author Thanks AJ, oh yah I read that post start to finish before I posted tonight lol small world 50/50 not good buddy, guess I am in the same boat but the weird thing is it only happens with my pmdg products never happens on my other payware aircraft, figures right, take care. August 16, 201114 yr At least you don't have to waste time reinstalling, etc. In fact, I have learned that reinstalling is really not necessary (unless you really messed things up and deleted an important file). I have had a few interesting situations come up in my few years of FSX simming that I was able to cure just by retracing my steps, figuring out what new fangled add on or tweak I added, and just try to eliminate potential conflicts to find the culprit. The ENB mod as a culprit was one of my breakthrough experiences, and has taught me to always be aware of what I am doing to my system and have a backup plan handy. No joke, it would take weeks to get my FSX back to where it is now if I was to reinstall from scratch. When I first installed FSX years ago, it was not uncommon for me to reinstall it every few weeks/months, as documentation is poor and one has to fish out the time tested advice of pro's like NickN, Bojote, and others on AVSIM on their own. Today, I am proud to say I haven't reinstalled FSX since I built this system in May 2010!! Experience comes from trial and error, but it's still a time consuming endevaour, and it's good to have the support of the knowledgeable folks here on AVSIM and other forums to offer guidance. Like everything in life now, I would hate to think of what the FSX experience would be like without the internet! A.J. Domingo
