September 6, 201114 yr Why - the answer is money, of course. Boeing wants to keep as much tech on the plane the same so it can be a common type rating. If they monkey with too many things, the FAA will make airlines give more training. That's one of Boeing's selling points. Newer tech exists, but it's expensive to train pilots to use it. Yeah, they did that with the Triple 7 when they decided to do it with fly-by-wire. They could have installed a joystick system a-la Airbus, but went for the more conventional yoke like the rest of their planes, just to keep things consistent. Cristi Neagu
September 6, 201114 yr if you want to hear an annoying trim noise, check out the ATR's trim. If the trim is held more than 2 seconds (not sure the precise timing) a very annoying alarm goes off.
