RENO, Nev. (WAVY) - A plane plunged into the stands Friday at an air race event in Reno in what an official described as a "mass casualty situation."It wasn't immediately known how many people were killed, but a medical official said more than 75 people were injured.

“It’s just like a massacre. It’s like a bomb went off,” said Dr. Gerald Lent of Reno, who witnessed the crash. “There are people lying all over the runway.” The only thing the Korean War veteran could compare the scene to was combat.“One guy was cut in half. There’s blood everywhere,” Lent said. “There’s arms and legs. One guy just said ‘hey, there’s another foot over here.”

Holy crap, that was a weird crash for an air race, the thing appeared to be nosediving straight down, although I suppose if it had gone in flat it would have caused even more casualties. Whatever the cause it looks pretty grim. Just got to hope the casualty list isn't too high, but it looks pretty bad. Condolences to all concerned. Al

Just saw a video of the whole incident, the plane climbed out of the race, then did a wing over right into the ground. I know it probably wasn't but it looked like a controlled maneuver. The youtube video poster is "lumberdoctor". (Warning there is some 4 letter words used in it, that's why I didn't link it!!) It's the clearest video of the incident I've seen. Whatever the cause my heart goes out to those involved and their families!!

Terrible. Reports are coming in that is took out the front of a box seat area.
