Do PMDG recommend using weather programs?

Featured Replies

ASE has, up until recently with intense --well not intense but pretty "involved"-- tweaking, been a real pain in the neck with the NGX. The biggest issue being fluctuating IAS and funky things happening in the 10,000ft+ range. Things like abnormally high temps, weird S-turns, etc. It became too much for me at one point, so I put ASE away for a while. After an FSX reinstall, ASE update, ASE .cfg tweak, and FSUIPC set up, I've finally gotten weather acceptable to fly in. PS. Sorry for the edits. I wasn't liking the way I delivered it. Jim Skorna, don't yell at me. I try to follow your directions over in your forum. Praying.gif

Using FSWXLite and have abandoned REX and others. This free weather engine is great and has zero issues if you set it up right. Perfect flights, no bloat, no memory hogging, no lag, no stutters, Perfect weather. I recommend it but make sure you set it up properly. It's not hard.
I tried it, and compared to ASE, it doesn't even get a 3 out of 10. The winds aloft data was sketchy at best. The winds were changing direction by as much as 180 degrees in a couple of miles. Wind smoothing wasn't doing anything to fix that. The AT was working like crazy. One second I was getting 50 kts of headwind, 10 seconds later it was a crosswind. Also, by using FSUIPC to inject weather data to FSX, you get the inversion bug (you know, when you get +35C at FL 250). The only way to fix that is to use Simconnect, with which you get stutters. When the data is being written to FSX, the sim pauses about 100ms for each station. And that is extremely annoying on takeoff and landing. All in all, if you like this program, you've never used ASE. Just buy it. It's well worth it.

Can anyone please elaborate how all this stuff works. I am hesitating to begin using some 3rd party weather sim, but I do not know which is better. There are many reports that ASE is not the best option with NGX. I fly online @ IVAO almost exclusively so I always get real time weather through the IVAO connection, represented by the FSX engine. Will it be better option to use ASE or this new FSRealWXLite? One of the main things that are bit unclear to me are:- What is the difference between 3rd party weather program, default FSX "real time" weather (the one that updates from Jepessen every 15 min) and IVAO weather (also updates with RW metars)?- are the differencies that big to justify another ~100 MB RAM on already strained E8400/2GB ram machine? thanks in advanceIgnat Ignatov

I have both ASE and REX. I purchased ASE back when it was still called ASA and used it for weather. Was good but somehow I abandoned it. Then I got to know REX and used it for some time and again -abandoned it. Now when I got my new rig I kind of returned to REX + Overdrive. It does improve overall looks of FSXweather textures, and I am ok with it. I know many guys out there use ASE as weather engine and REX for textures, since I don' t know how to do thatI stick to REX. So for I haven' t had any issues with this weather addon + NGX.
There is no 'knowing how to do it'. Just load the REX Overdrive textures, period. Don't enable the REX Wx Engine. For as long as it's not running, you're still using fsx weather. Now, launch ASE the way you did when you used to use it, and that's it. the weather will come from ASE, but the textures will be the one from REX. Also, take a look at this thread below, and it will tell you what adjustment to make on FSX.CFG, and on FSUIPC (if you're using that). it's very easy and I can tell you that REX + ASE is the best weather and cloud, sea, sky combination.
