I could be wrong, but I believe the higher settings only add aircraft & cloud reflections.

Ok. I've set mine to Low2.x and its looking good now. Thanks for the help mate.

Found it...http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ptaylor/archive/2007/06/08/fsx-tip-of-the-week-water-slider-and-fps-costs.aspx

Here is a breakdown of what the water slider does:1.x has no reflections:
· The lowest 1.x level does the basic shader.
· The mid 1.x level adds an animated detail texture.
· The highest 1.x level adds some specular effects2.x adds a 2nd pass to get reflections and this can be a killer:
· 2.low reflects only the clouds and has a little more complicated shader – it can be a good compromise
· 2.med adds scenery, eg terrain and custom objects
· 2.hi adds Autogen (trees, generic objects ) and basically reflects the entire scene, which costs a lot Water 1.x thus just increases the shader cost and adds sampling from more textures as you move the sliders to the right. For modern hw, thats no problem. Water 2.x needs a 2nd pass to generate the reflection. That means rendering the world a 2nd time into a texture as a render target. Which is an obvious performance hit. And thats just for the 1st 2.x level. Reading my list above, with Water 2.hi the shader and rendering cost is intense and directly related to full scene complexity. So having Autogen and Scenery to extremely dense coupled with Water 2.hi has a direct negative impact on performance. Water 2.hi, like our other 2 2nd pass features ( shadows, bloom ) basically cuts your FPS in half. Water 2.med with Scenery complexity at extremely dense and Mesh resolution all the way right means that the 2nd render pass is going to cost a lot. Lower your scenery and mesh settings, though, and 2.med might not be such a FPS killer while adding a bit more visual quality. Water 2.lo renders only the clouds and the skybox on the 2nd pass, and can be a very good compromise. And in general when over water its mostly the cloud reflections you see except at the shoreline. So this choice doesnt sacrifice too much visual quality and is FPS friendly. Understanding this lets you make intelligent choices. Water 2.lo with high Autogen and high Scenery is much better than any other Water 2.x because 2.lo doesn’t render the terrain or Autogen. You have to understand FSX and its performance as a Socratic, holistic thing across all the subsystems and how they interact. It’s really hard to use try a simple Aristotelian breakdown as a vehicle to understanding FSX.

Good find :-)Cheers

Oh, it just occured to me that since you've recently switched to nvidia from ati, be sure to check the nvidia configuration guide at the top of this forum. Ryan spells out some pretty good antialiasing schemes that'll help you balance appearance vs performance. (I use the 8xs setup)

Cheers Ken. I have setup my Nvidia drivers as per Ryan's guide. Very helpful for a noob, I must say!Have another question: I've also just made the switch to Win7 64-bit and got the dreaded UIAutomationCore.dll crash during a flight.. I remember reading a while ago about a fix.. Any pointers for us mate? Thanks

I believe it's the vista-32bit version that's supposed to go in your fsx folder. Ill see if I can't dig up some good links. In the meantime a forum search here or in the ngx or 744 fora should turn something up for you.Edit: A partial workaround is to minize your menu usage. That's what triggers it, so the fewer menus you open the less likely it is to happen.

Hi Ken. Thanks for the advice. I did a search and have copied the 32bit version of the DLL and the problem has indeed vanished. Happy days! ;-)
Try 275.33http://www.nvidia.co...hql-driver.htmlIt works well with my 570's.
Also works well for my 580! I never change it unless there is a stability problem or something major is fixed or improved for one of my games.

Same here pretty much. I started with whatever driver came with the card. After a month or so it started acting up & I installed the then current 275.33. Only reason I haven't updated since then is I haven't had any issues.

Guys,I seem to have another issues on my Win7 64-bit system! I seem to get a randon crash on exit error: BEX with a StackHash_0a9e error code. Any ideas how this can be cured. I've read that its related to DEP and I experience it with both, DEP off and on.Please advise. Thanks

What's the error log say?Edit: I found one discussion where it was the video card driver at fault and another that was fixed by a complete system reinstall (I only recommend that as a last resort). Everything else pointed to dep, as you've already found...Other possible causes:FSInn/FSCopilotExternal FPS LimiterIf it started right after copying the uiautomationcore.dll you might try a different version of that file.

Thanks Ken. Its not confirmed yet but its sort of pointing towards couatl.exe. I and a few others have reported this in and FSDT/Virtuali are looking into this as i type this..Will keep you updated..

Cool. I'd like to know the outcome as I have a few fsdt airports myself.
