January 30, 200422 yr Hi Ken,First, many thanks for a great job :)Couple of questions: I have no problem as far as setting Programs to 'Stop and Restart' (with the exception of Explorer), but what about Services? In the case of Programs it is clear what I can do with safety as I have been using EnditAll for some time now and have experienced no issues. I've also disabled or set to Manual many Services but am still left with 38 Services running! I understand you should leave (RPC) Remote Procedure Call service alone as you are likely to crash your system, but what of the rest?Your provided link to blackviper.com implies that these decisions are ours alone to make. Is this correct? Or, if the user's sole intention is to prepare the PC for an FS only session, would it be safe to 'Stop and Restart' all Services with the exception of RPC in the certain knowledge that all will be restored on exiting FS? I note several Services relate to Norton, for example. One final question: What is the position regarding FS crashing back to desktop for whatever reason? Will a reboot restore everything?Sorry if I appear to be nitpicking but I expect there will be a few like me who would like to exploit your creation to the full, but are currently feeling a little uneasy about what exactly can be done safely.Thanks.Mike :-wave
January 30, 200422 yr Thanks for the kind words!1) If FS crashes, FSAutoStart will still work and restore all software as if FS had been stopped correctly.2) As far as services, they are just like programs...they just can run without have a user login first (this is a general statement, there are some exceptions). The Black Viper site has some good ideas as to what can be shut down...I see no problem shutting them down and restarting them after FS. I guess you will just have to try it out and see ;-)

I suspect the answer is probably yes, but I like to be certain about such things - typical of flight sim obsessives?! ;)Sorry if I appear to be nitpicking but I expect there will be a few like me who would like to exploit your creation to the full, but are currently feeling a little uneasy about what exactly can be done safely.Thanks.Mike :-wave
January 30, 200422 yr No need to be afraid (not of the software, anyhow - ken...i'll reserve judgement ;)) - the program doesn't shut anything off permanently, and if something hangs, you can just reboot.I'd still love a default set of processes and services list that are good to shut down - visited the black viper site - would rather spend the hour needed to digest that one flying fs. Trial and error is working fine for me so far. Also, Ken, there are a few services that can't be shut down - since they can't be altered, is there a way to just not show them in the list?LOVE this program - really helping my modest system work with FS9 - I've definately gotten a few FPS using this util! Thanks again!sg [email protected] | 32gb RAM | EVGA GTX1080 8gb | Mostly P3Dv5 (also IL2:BoX, DCS, XP11)
January 30, 200422 yr I'm planning on including a Mr. Wizard button to automatically setup which services/programs to shutdown.Yeah I need to filter a little more. I know the Event Log cannot be shutdown, for example...
January 30, 200422 yr Gotta change your sig to something like "lord of the Utilities and AVSIM forums, amoung other things...."! [email protected] | 32gb RAM | EVGA GTX1080 8gb | Mostly P3Dv5 (also IL2:BoX, DCS, XP11)
January 30, 200422 yr First THANKS!I would like to see the window sizw maintained.I stretch it to see explanations.Would like to see ability to sort list based upon clicking column descriptions.Regards,Dick Boley @KLBE regards, Dick near Pittsburgh, USA
January 30, 200422 yr Sorry -- meant column sizes ... You were too quick!Dick Boley @KLBE regards, Dick near Pittsburgh, USA
January 30, 200422 yr Ken.I've dowbloaded V3 but don't know how to install ie. Double clicking on FSAutoStart_Setup doesn't do it. Please help
January 30, 200422 yr What OS are you installing on? The setup is a .msi file, which is the standard Microsoft installer package. It should definitely install on 2000 and XP.It also installs on my out-of-the-box Win 98 SE Virtual PC.
January 30, 200422 yr Hi Ken, I just did a test run with build 3 on XP, and it seems to work very well. FS seemed to run quite a bit faster and more fluidly than before. I can't put numbers to it, because I didn't do any bench marking, but I'm sure there's a big improvement there. Thanks again for your innovative work!
January 30, 200422 yr Thank you Ken. I'm a little slow. Got it installed now. Many thanks for rhis and your other FORUM work.
January 31, 200422 yr Hi Ken,Any chance of letting us know which services you can "stop&restart" specifically for connecting to the internet while in FS for real time weather. It is a right pain going through the services to see "what happens when I stop this one" routine x( Apart from this little glitch I found a big difference in the sim......100% AI at EGLL never dropped below 14 FPS (previously would go down as far as 6 or 7). Impressed :-jumpy Ian EGPF :-wave
