Fog help?

Featured Replies

hi guys! I am wondering if there is any way to make a more realistic fog layer generation.. when im flying though the layer of fog, everything is realistic, I cant see very far or anything, but then as soon as I fly though the top of the fog layer, it completly dissapears, and I can see the ground infront of me, although just 2 seconds before I couldnt even see the ground right below my plane..Is there any way to make the layers remain, without lowering the visiblility of the layer above the fog layer?I dont really understand why this occurs, becuase there shouldnt be a difference between fog on the ground, or clouds 10'000 feet up. When I go above the clouds, they do not dissapear, they remain..So is there a way to substitute clouds for fog, or any way to keep the fog so I cant see the ground, but still have different layers?I hope i explaned it clearly sorry if I didnt. If you have any troubles understanding anything just say, and ill try again..Thanks for the help

Are you using REX? Base FSX puts down a flat sheet of 'fog' that is visible when you fly above the fog. This base implementation is very limited (i.e. lame) for it looks the same regardless of the fog density and it's always perfectly flat. When REX installs its textures, it breaks something in FSX such that this 'fog layer sheet' is no long is displayed. I've seen posts for work arounds but they are all manual in nature. REX's response is 'too bad, we can't fix this so go away'. I too would love a fix for this problem, for immersion is completely killed the when that nice fog layer instantly vanishes.

One of the most annoying problems in fsx.Think this vid sums it up.

One of the main reasons why I wrote Open Clouds.I think ASE and another free prog out there do similar fixes.

I should have said further. The video shows 2 fsx sequences flying into Leeds/Bradford 5 minutes apart. The first was with fsx real weather, the 2nd with open clouds. Both apps were using similar if not identical data for the weather. The fix involves covering any fog layer with an additional layer of clouds so that you do not notice (or not notice as much) the sudden jump from high visibility to low.

Yeah, i'm sure that was their exact words, hahaha....

Once 'Flight' is released are you closing your server down?
Hope not . Just upgraded the server as currently looking after 50 odd multi player communities as well asOpen Clouds weather data and a soon to be released library for Open Control as well as normal web site etc. However, once flight is out I am not convinced there will be a market for fsx add ons. I cannot think of another game where a large proportion of customers have decided to stick with the previous six year old version. (Think back to what mobile phone you had six years ago!)

well actually I dont even get that flat sheet of fog. it just goes to unlimited vilibility.. with no layer generation.. full visibility down to the ground.. but I im gonna install openclouds and I hope that makes it a bit better.. Thankyou

This was only slight hyperbole. I read in the REX support forum a somewhat exasperated response by their support team that said: we can't and won't do anything about it so this issue is closed. I can't find that post, but if I do I'll definately link it here.
