Busting altitude

Featured Replies

Have flown 2 flights today with 2 different aircraft, however when cleared to a certain altitude eks. FL120 and reaching it the controller keeps telling me i have busted my altitude, when checking my altitude "ctrl Z" the altitude is + - 30 ft of my assigned altitude, is the ATC to sensitive or is it how it should be? allowing for wind and pressure it would be difficult to stay at precisly FL120.FS9.1ASEDA F70Feelthere ERJ 145

Were you cleared to FL120 or 12000ft? There's a big difference. Tell me your departure and arrival airports and that should provide a big clue.

are you hitting b to set the altimeter to local pressure? don't. that only works in the united states. outside the US, it makes a mess of your flying, altitudes, flight levels, etc.if you are inside the us, or outside the us and not using the b key, or you think you are at the right flight level, and you are being assigned a flight level, or at the right altitude and being assigned an altitude, or you just can't seem to get this to work, duplicate the problem, make a log, instructions pinned to the top of the forum, and send me a log of your busted altitudes.jd

Read the section in the RC manual about transition altitudes and flight levels. As jd states using the 'B' key in FS to set altimeter pressure will not work outside of FAA US areas and that is because RC uses the transition altitudes for the local airport region and the FS 'B' key is coded in FS to use strictly 18,000 feet, not true world wide. Here's a summary:If you wish to know the transition altitude for your areas of interest just look at the RC controller page after your flight plan is entered. This is the transition altitude that RC uses.If you are commanded above the transition altitude the RC controller will give you announce flight level such FL 80 for 8,000 feet (FL times 100 to get feet) if the TA is say 6,000 feet. When in the flight level region you set your altimeter to 29.92 in. or 1013 mb. standard pressure. In this example if RC commands you to below the TA it will announce your altitude in feet such as 5,000 feet and you set your altimeter for local pressure as announced by the controller. The controller will use inches or millibars as appropriate for your area.In addition, during a climb or descent through the transition altitude you will hear a voice saying "altimeter check". That is your reminder clue to check for a transition between standard and local altimeter pressure. For similar reasons using ctrl-Z to read altitude in FS can be misleading.

Another tip, set your tolerance margin to something bigger, unless you like to be busted all the time.

Another tip:Start your climb or descent before acking the command unless you are near a waypoint that needs to be credited. RC wants to see fairly fast your rate of climb or descent (+/- 200 ft./min or greater) soon after your ack.
