February 3, 200422 yr >this is a good example of what i feel is wrong with payware..>it is to expensive for what you are getting>>when you are paying like 3 times the money for an addon then>you are for a game thats just too much. The time it takes to>make an aircraft or an addon scenery is nothing even close to>what it takes to actually make the sim, microsoft throws in>the whole world... And tons of really not to bad planes. for>like 40$>>I would only justify paying this much if accuracy was a must.>Like training pilots for a certain area. 30$ is the average>price point for pretty much every addon I dont see why this is>an exception. In the law of supply and demand, market forces dictate what can and cannot be justified. The fact is, the degree of work that must go into creating something like that could be months, even a years worth of effort. Do you really think $139 is too much if it was the result of a years work, unavailable anywhere else, and likely to be bought only by a small percentage of the minority of simmers interested in that level of accuracy, in that particular country? For all that, I do agree this seems like an awfully large stepping stone in price for what looks like photo-mapped scenery. But then look at the price of UK VFR Scenery. One season, no night textures, no autogen and around the around the same price for the same area coverage! At that level of comparison you have to say that the Swiss scenery isn't actually bad value, if it includes full seasons, night testures, autogen and custom airports accurate to the max. But who is going to spend the money to find out? Allcott
February 3, 200422 yr Commercial Member I wonder how many of those who think that this is expensive come from the US?Believe me, you are all somewhat spoilt by the economy of scale, not only with flightsim addons, but with most consumer goods. I've worked hard to negotiate with those who own the aerial photography here in New Zealand, and based on the projected market I would need to charge about US$3000 for half the country. One negotiating tactic -- which failed -- was to divide the country into the two islands and sell each set for NZ$100 -- which is very close to US$139 for the two sets. This wasn't near enough to purchase the images though. I certainly think that for quality coverage of a small country like Switzerland the price is spot on. I know a lot of people here in New Zealand who would pay that for some local coverage.
February 3, 200422 yr They sure would... but if they've looked into the cost of the photography, they (quickly!) think about something else.By the way, I think I know how to fix the projection issue with the godzone scenery. Would you be inclined to release an update once I come up with a process that works?
February 3, 200422 yr I have it pre-ordered and I'll post screenshots once I get it. :)I also think the quality of Megascenery could be better. The mountains are stunning and the scenery looks good from 3-4000 ft. but the UK VFR Photographic Scenery provides better colours and more detail. I think it's because the UK and Switzerland sceneries use aerial imagery, while Megascenery uses satellite photos. -
February 3, 200422 yr This may be seen as expensive as software, but compare it to the costs of some flightsim-related hardware.Flight Yoke - $100.00 to
February 3, 200422 yr Hiya Guys....A couple of things to remember from the commercial point of view with products like this...The imagery that is used to create this quality of scenery is horrendously expensive even to developers. The number of copies sold is likely to be quite low, as this a specialized product, resulting in the unit price been high. The amount of work involved in putting it all together is daunting. Each aerial photo has to adjusted for tone and placement and although the process is to a degree can be automated a lot of the work has to be done manually. The UK VFR scenery consists of well over 150,000 files and over 6GB of data so if you work it out in mb for your $
February 3, 200422 yr I wouldn't pay that much if it was the whole world! That's rediculous! To the one that said "This what's wrong with payware." Have no fear. They wont be around much longer trying to sell that for that much. That's what's so good about competition.
February 3, 200422 yr Hi, Just my two cents but I'm worried about the price of Megascenery and what happens after I buy a bunch of it and find out that FS2006 doesn't use it ! Then what ...this goes on and on !!!TONY
February 3, 200422 yr "Maybe they should do what Visual Flight did and release it in sections to divide up the cost."That was the first thought that came to mind as I read this thread. If they divided it into four areas and released them seperately over the course of a year for $35 each then it wouldn't seem expensive at all.David
February 3, 200422 yr A few things prevent me from preordering it right away. There is no email address that I can see for support & questions. Also what about night scenery, does it work ?And finally runways/airports - do they work, runway lights, etc ? These are valid questions since it may look like their airports are simply part of the scenery.Michael J. Michael J.
February 3, 200422 yr I think that I will be getting this add on because I love Switzerland. We have a house in Davos where I love to go skiing or just to relax, great country! Anyway yes the price does seem kind of high but given the cost of the source material and the work involved I think that it is fair. I would much rather see it priced lower but they do need to make their money back. I wonder if they will sell it to me at a reduced price since I have a place in Switzerland? :-lol Philip Olsonhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/supporter.jpg
February 3, 200422 yr If I were interested in only a single area (like Switzerland) or aircraft I'd happily pay that much to get it to perfection. It would still be a lot less than buying a lot of mediocre addons covering a wide area or range of aircraft which most people do, and certainly a lot less than renting a real aircraft and pilot/instructor.European instruction rates are actually higher per hour than that $139 addon (I'd have to pay almost $200 an hour here at the current dollar rate for example and Switzerland is more expensive still).
February 3, 200422 yr So you buy 4 $40 addons instead, each of lower quality than this one, and don't know if they will work in FS2020.Who is smarter? The person concentrating on getting a small area that he visits all the tim (however, small is relative) perfect or another trying to get a huge area where he comes once in a while a little bit over standard at the same price?
February 3, 200422 yr So?What does that have to do with this simulator or this payware?I'd happily pay 139 or 200/hour for the real deal. I have payed for real lessons and continue to do so when I can.You are now talking apples and oranges here and your argument is moot.
February 3, 200422 yr Well, considering how expensive payware aircraft are, I think the price is still resonable. The quality seems to be excellent, MUCH better than the megascenery satellite imagery. Plus, Switzerland is probably one of the perdiest countries in Europe, you get the alps, beautiful lakes,... the whole country! -Daniel
