Null zone setting, X-Plane 10

Featured Replies

The first plane I flew after loading x-plane 10 was the Cessna -- just to get my bearings and play with rendering options etc. I had a devil of a time tracking that plane straight down the runnway for take off. I could do it but it was not like the real thing. I am a private pilot and flew Tomahawks, Warriors, Cherokees, Cessnas and Citabria Decathlons (taildragger). A Cessna with no violent wind gusts should track down the runway to rotation pretty smoothly. I tried the Stinson and that was a wild ride getting that thing off the ground. The rudder inputs were way too sensitive and the plane was all over the runway on takeoff. So I went through the calibration process and checked off the far right block in Data input and output, setting number 8: Joystick ail/elv/rud and all of my joystick/rudder inputs were right on. Finally I went into Settings/Joystick & Equipment/Nullzone and pushed the Nullzone from zero to 15. That did the trick. I still need to play with this setting but now the Cessna tracks fairly realistically and I can get the Stinson off the ground fairly realistically.I have Saitek Proflight Rudder pedals and Saitek x52 pro stick and throttle. I don't know if the same issue applies to all equipment or if it is just a sensitivity issue with Saitek equipment but per the flyout info when you hover your mouse over Nullzone -- my equipment must just be somewhat "noisy".

Just part of the learning curve for a new sim, and of course ver. 10 is new. I think everyone's controllers are probably different. My CH pro pedals for instance are getting a bit of age on them and I have to set them differently than what I did for Pro Pilot for instance. I of course along with most everyone else, (in my opinion), are constantly trying new things, trying to get better. I think that is 2/3's the fun of it. LOL

Flying is the 2nd greatest thrill known to man

The 1st is landing.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and settings. At the moment I'm spending the bulk of my X-Plane time trying to get the controller settings right. The controller response seems to be so different from FSX that it's like starting from scratch. My challenge is trying to tame the Thrustmaster Warthog, which is a very sensitive controller and one that seems to require some damping in X-Plane if you're not going to have an overcontrol problem. So far I've worked with the sensitivity and stability settings but not yet with the calibration routine. I'll give that a try.Let us know how your experiments come out.

Just by way of follow-up, based on this thread, I adjusted my settings to add 30 percent null. That plus 100 percent nonlinear and 30 percent stability allowed me to fly the Dreamfoil Robinson R22 very effectively. The null zone setting helped a lot. Very strange for a FSX user - shows how much more sensitive the X-Plane joystick response is. But I feel like I'm beginning to get there.Again, this is for a Thrustmaster Warthog, so your mileage may vary.

Discovered another issue. My joystick and rudders began behaving erratically again and I noticed the joystick was not centering proper. I went into the Saitek properties through Devices and Printers on my desktop and when I got to the joystick properties noticed it was not centered properly on this screen. Then lights started flashing on my joystick buttons and the cross hairs for the joystick moved around erratically for a minute -- then it all stopped and centered. I went back into x-plane and everything was centered properly, then took off in the Stinson with null zone set back to zero and all was fine. The plane tracked normally.I use this joystick and rudder in Rise of Flight and have no issues at all. So now I am going into the device properties for my joystick prior to every x-plane flight and making sure everything is centered there and before I fly in x-plane I check to see everything is centered there. It seems like a random thing. I can go in 2 times and no problems and the third time I try to take off in the Stinson and once I give it some throttle the plane veers wildly, and if I happen to get the plane in the air it is all over the place,No idea what is causing this but have to assume it is a problem within x-plane. As I said I do no calibrations at all in Rise of Flight and there has never been an issue with controlling planes on the ground or in the air. But when the joystick goes out of center in X-Plane it stays out of center outside of x-plane. Weird.

Next step is to reload my Saitek drivers and check for updates. Maybe it is a purely joystick issue. All I can report is that one time I can start the program and fly a Stinson off the run way with no problems; then quit the program, restart at the same airport and parameters, everything identical and once I put in throttle the plane swerves out of control wildly to the left or right. I didn't see a "tailwheel" lock command so am assuming it isn't a real world issue with flying a Stinson. Also, if I do manage to get the plane off the ground the joystick is still not able to stabilize the plane. Usually it just slews wildly and crashes the plane.

Hello everyone.Do any of you know a way of adjusting / set the Null zone for the Twist axis when you use it to View Left and Right? It works fine for Rudder Pedals and Pitch, Bank, but I could not find a way to set in XP9 or XP10?To test assign your Twist to view Right Left and go in VC Mode with the 172, you should have no interference when using your other controls to Pitch, Bank etc. TV

WOW - Thank you for the info on my squirrelly  Stinson.  This could not be right I thought.

I "used to " fly and I thought - HOLY COW...   this is nuts!...     I too am all over the runway and worse.

Now I have to make some adjustments and try again.

The 172 was a lot more forgiving, but still touchy.

I've been 3 days now trying to get my monitors situated ( 3 monitors on a 2d span ) but x plane only puts the plane on the left most monitor.  Something is obviously wrong here.   No problem in DCS..  but XPlane wants no part of it.

On to Day-4...   thanks for the posts on this.   One more for the learning curve.  I really hope XP works out because I like the idea of flying stick and rudder on something besides a P51D.

rburke,

I have heard that the Saitek drivers do not like Windows 7.  I use windows 7 and have never used the Saitek drivers and find the devices to work as advertised.  Your problems might stem to that issue.

Also, I set the right side sliders (I forget what they are labeled as) in the null zone area, to about 50%.  The ones on the left I leave at the far left settings.  Seems to work for me.

I can't speak to Saitek, but I know CH Control Manager is not needed and not advised. I use Windows 7 and 8.1 and setup my CH controllers in FSX or X-plane. I also have FSUIPC installed in FSX but don't use it for calibration unless I have problems or need to assign special buttons.

Even so, I always check controls and often must re-calibrate them before a flight as the center point sometimes seems to change, or my CH Pro Pedals simply disappear requireing an unplug/plug of the USB connector.
