January 17, 201214 yr Ken, Let me add to your list of "Good Lucks". I've been licensed for about 15 years, IFR for 10. Started simming with the first one. (Secret to FS1: Declare war by dropping bomb, not the other way around.)As you read above and have experienced, it's different. Looking outside is important. But, in some ways real flying is easier that way. I find trimming a plane way easier in real life because of the tactile feel of spinning an actual trim wheel as compared to a computer button. As for IFR, the hood (as opposed to "Foggles") makes me a bit quesy. I have probably 50 or so actual hours and no problem. Foggles, no problem. But, take me up for an IPC and make we wear a hood, and I might vomit. It's weird. It doesn't even have to be bumpy. Anyway, good luck and happy flying. January 20, 201214 yr Author So after 10 days of night-shifts I'm back in the saddle, er... cockpit...I experienced my first crosswind landing today. Wind was 230/20 on RWY15. Do remember, I'm still a little fuzzy on my landing technique from last time. First approach, at about 40' agl I told the instructor he had the plane in no uncertain terms. We were stable & all that, but I was starting to feel a little overwhelmed & the ground just kept getting closer & closer...Second approach was better & I got it down to about 6' but was still crabbing so he took it from there.3rd-6th, better on each one, he helped a little with the rudder but I'm getting the hang of it. It's weird, I can do a good crab & I can do a good slip but going from one to the other is a bit like balancing on a highwire for me. Feels (in my mind) like I'm about to fall off when I start adding left rudder to make the transition. It was also gusty & I heard the stall horn bleep briefly a few time in the lulls, even in climbout. January 30, 201214 yr Author About 11 hours logged so far counting the one solo flight (wind hasn't been very agreeable lately).I did some hood work Saturday & of course that was a snap. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but when the instructor covered up the artificial horizon it didnt affect me at all because I was already only using the airspeed, turn coordinator & heading indicator to fly the plane with an occasional glance at altitude.Did a few more stalls after that & headed back to the airport. I got to do a left pattern entry from the right side of the runway this time. First time for that, so it was interesting.
