Some random thoughts. (Warning: positive Flight post!)

Featured Replies

Probably no one will read this because the forum is flooded with posts and apparently most people are only here to post and read bad things about Flight :( but here are some random thoughts of mine.I have to say it's quite funny to see that a lot of people who are so happy with FSX and who said Flight probably would be rubbish, are now raising hell about Flight... They said they didn't care but they do. Why is everyone so upset about Flight...? You have FSX: be happy with it. You have your PMDG 737NGX: go fly it. You don't HAVE to use Flight. Why bother (like some do) if there is a forum for Flight on Avsim? Don't come in this subforum anymore and PLEASE don't post here anymore, thank you. Everyone who posted ONCE that Flight is crap (how do they know without seeing it, I wonder) should leave this forum after that one post: what's the use of posting twice (or even more, as a lot of people did) that Flight sucks? Utterly useless. The only reason why people are so angry and negative and still keep posting their rants here is that deep inside they aren't satisfied with FSX and their awesome addons... Seems they wanted something new and better than FSX anyway...? :wink:The thing is of course that even though we can use FSX for years to come, there IS an end to its lifespan... At one moment pc gaming will have evolved so much that FSX will look as if it's the first version from the eighties... That's inevitable. Flight IS a step forward in certain aspects and who knows how great and big and beautiful it will become in the end...! Why start shouting now when we don't know what the future will bring?I am positive about Flight. Why shouldn't I. Every new flying game is positive news. I've got FSX and if I want to I will be able to enjoy it for years to come, but it's great that there are new options! I am mostly a low and slow flyer, a tree skimming nut, so as far as graphics etc. are concerned Flight might just be what I've been looking for for years... :( If not, then I'll go back to FSX. Or I'll use both. But I have the idea Flight is going to be pretty awesome for people who like pretty awesome graphics. I do fly the PMDG 737NGX and well, I still will do that whenever I feel like it. There is no need to uninstall FSX when you install Flight...Not covering the whole world doesn't have to mean it's not a simulator, as has been said. That's nonsense. You can have a great sim only covering a small region. A LOT of people only fly above (for instance) Orbx FTX regions... so not having the entire world isn't a problem to a lot of simmers, so it seems. Also don't forget that not every simmer is into airliners that cross the pacific: a lot of people like to go low and slow and for those people Flight might be just the game they wanted for all these years... I think a LOT more people (who aren't using FSX at the moment) are interested in low and slow flying above beautiful scenery then sitting behind the panel of an airliner for 8 hours... You may hate it, but MS isn't stupid. Flight is geared towards those kind of wannabe pilots for starters, but MS seems to have an open mind on what's to come in the future.Ok, the very first version of Flight is bad news for airline simmers, no doubt about that. But you never know what's going to happen. In the meantime, enjoy what you've got and get over it. I am sure that a lot of the people who shout that Flight is crap and they won't touch it, will still download the FREE (!!!) version when it is released... :wink:Until then happy flying. In FSX. Or FS9. Or Prepar3D. Or Xplane or Aerofly FS... All in all 2011 has been a VERY good year for flight simmers and the future is looking bright, so... REJOICE! Why all the anger when so much is happening concerning flying on the pc??? :(

Great post, you hit the nail on the top!! I kinda like this regions thing. I for example, fly never in southeast Asia or China, but I got it in FSX. Well, it's nice to have the opportunity to fly there if I like but that won't likely happen. So with Flight I could save some money there and just get the regions I want. Nice idea from MS. :(

Best regards, Steffen

Problem is ms is not going to make any continents or countries. If flight even makes a profit, which I doubt, and ms decides to use resources to expand this offering (rather than using resources for xbox), they will make location-specific scenery (read small location). It will not be a situation where they make the whole world, or anything even close to that, and the user just chooses the countries or regions he/she wants to fly in to pop balloons and capture golden doughnuts.

When FSX everyone complained that the Sim should have been optimized for machines in existence at that time. Looking back, I think the Aces team did us a big favor by developing software that is only now being taken advantage of by the current hardware. My sense is that the Flight Simulator franchise will no longer be developed by Microsoft. Flight will not be a continuation of FSX in anyway. However, based on what I have seen, Flight does have potential to expose the genre of flight simulation to a lot of new people. Tom in a different post pointed out that the demographic of this forum is skewed to the older set. Based on the way that Flight is set up, with achievements, and a focus on low and slow flight friendly on beginners, there is a lot of potential to expose new people to flying planes on computers. Flight will be focused on making flying fun. Those who want to expand upon what Flight offers will be able to take advantage of FSX, XP10, P3D, etc.I look at Flight as filling a gap, which is that it is software that is geared to those who are casually interested. But Flight will introduce more people to the Flight Simulation genre than FSX, XP10, and P3D can and will ever do. In the long run, this will be a GREAT thing for the serious simulation enthusiast because some of those casual gamers will be come sim junkies, expanding the market and driving demand for the excellent content we have become accustomed to. So yes, while I am disappointed we dont have a successor to FSX that is being made by microsoft. I am intrigued by the possible expansion of the market, and what other publishers, like Lockeed, Laminar and possibly Aerosoft, can do for the serious sim community. Even if they dont do anything soon, FSX will continue to be viable for years to come. And by then, who knows what Microsoft may do.So I would suggest that everyone, once their anger subsides, calm down and appreciate Flight for what is and what it can do for us, the serious Sim community. I think that in the long run, both casual and serious simmers will be very happy with our options.

You´ve summed it up pretty nicely. Look at FS9, it´s still used by a lot of people unwilling to move or can´t cause of the resources FSX needs. FSX will be, as you said, for the ones who got hooked on FS with Flight. I´m somehow experienced with FSX but I´ll load Flight as soon as it gets available just to check out how it is. The grafics look nice on these shots, so I´m really looking forward to Flight.

Best regards, Steffen

This is a bit like giving a starving man a 2-day old McDonald's hamburger. He might find it revolting at first, but after a couple of bites he grits his teeth and tries to convince himself that "Maybe this isn't so bad."

Excellent way to summarize the matter, the only thing I would change is that the Mc Donald hamburger is 2 years old.Other than that you hit the point.

I'm sure there will be plenty of people happy with Flight. As for the regions I'd be pretty happy if I lived in Hawaii, but I don't. The whole reason I am angered with Flight is that I'm unhappy and tired og FSX. I had hoped Flight would be FSXI, but nothing in the info coming from MS seems to cater to old fans so, I'll just have to move on and get back to the dated graphics, popping autogen, stutters and blurries in the old FSX girl...

Flight is only useful to low and slow flyers that are happy with default planes. I don't fall into that category and the vast majority here do not either.. MS Pilotwings is a major disappointment for those of us that was hoping for FSX with true multicore support and other fixes. If you are happy with this game go play it but the majority of simmers are going to trash it.
