Why is development of a new simulator so difficult?

Featured Replies

Just an observation, but it seems like so many developers are shying away from the idea of creating a new flight simulator-- usually due to money, resources, other costs/time. I get that, but on the other hand, you have developers like Xplane, DCS (their A-10 and Blackshark), Thirdwire simulations and Flightgear simulator all created on minimal budgets by teams of anywhere from one to a handful of people (Flightgear being an all volunteer group). What if just a new simulator world/environment was created with maybe one basic plane? Let the third parties create the airplanes, traffic, weather, landclass/textures and scenery. I mean these third party companies are already organized-- we just need a new simulator "world". I know, easier said than done...

Aren't Flightgear and X-Plane bascially already that? Yet for whatever reason(s) they don't seem to appeal to many people here. Lots of people complain that X-Plane doesn't have airport buildings for example.

Which is a silly complaint, as you can import buildings in very easily, and the taxiways/runways/navaids tend to be kept up to date rather well. It was a bit annoying at first, but then I remembered the terminal buildings in FS9, which were all wrong and horrible for the airports I flew into. I'd rather leave the design of terminals up to dedicated third parties.

Big Sigs with PC Specs are just another way for men to Compensate.

The 'world' is the most difficult part. Creating an engine is an incredibly difficult process (at least if it were to come close to competing with FSX and XP10). Some research into game engines will show you just how massive an undertaking it is.

Looks like it was easily done , but just also with one Island -- It's called MS FLIGHT !!

It is a massive undertaking and such a waste considering that Microsoft's ESP platform/engine is very good. If only it had been donated by the great philantropist Bill Gates to the FS community extraordinary things could have happened.

I agree with MSFP. What dighost describes may very well be what MSF is intended to be.

Why? Because the required source code for even the most simple of simulations would be several ten's of MILLION lines of code, that's why!
