Some hardware questions for 'serious' Flight

Featured Replies

OK fellas, I'm eager to be converted. Maybe I should investigate things further considering I'm still checking out the build of a new sim. I have more or less thrown away the idea of three monitors for a VC and am currently looking at the Dell Ultrashap 30" monitor, which is a rather expensive bit of kit, so any alternative will be a good move. However, I will still need to be convinced :(

I run a 60" sony Bravia at 1080. Xbox games look great on it, FSX does do, and so do the other PC games i play through it.Home Entertainment PC FTW!!!!!!!!

A lot of people notice the 'shimmer' effect, when looking at autogen trees or buildings. Most obvious when running with lots of addons, which seem to overload the old-school FSX graphics engine. On a big screen for me, it's enough to make the buildings in FSX look fake - look at a big payware airport from 5 miles out, does it blend properly with the scenery?I'm hoping on the same hardware Flight will look a bit more natural. Modern lighting and alpha fade would help too - do I get those?
In Flight, for those who own the fastest Nvidia cards, the following anti-aliasing settings (available via Nvidia Inspector) will be a very welcome friend (in my speculative completely unfounded opinion):16xS32xSdepending upon your system performance (higher number = lowering performance). With these settings, I speculate that shimmer will be completely non-existent, with no requirement to enable any of the transparency AA settings.

Sweet! My wife would kill me if I tried this. Lucky to have a 24 inch monitor.

haha! Yeah it's fun for sure, especially with freetrack(using it cause i can get it to work at longer distances than trackir, using a zoom webcam). Those eyefinity 3x1 setups are really good too :)
3) how's the 'shimmer' on a big monitor?
Terrible....

I've got the Dell 30'', but it is never used for flight simming after I got a 40'' LCD TV. The Dell is far better in terms of image quality, but for me size matters the most. It's just hard going back to the 30''. Also I can calibrate the LCD TV for FSX and the Dell for photo/video to avoid changing settings and icc profiles when doing different work on the PC.

+1 on the Dell 30" - If desktop space is not an issue, I'd think a larger, yet lower res monitor would be preferrable. I need the high resolution and size of the Dell for work stuff. Although I have a i7 and super-duper video card, I don't *think* I run it at native resolution for FSX for performance reasons, something lower, although certainly not as low as x1080, but not at full native. . .I'd probably prefer a x1080, larger size, and better framerates over smaller, higher-res, yet slower FPS.
