Sid Star and chart relation?

Featured Replies

Hello,I just flew a appr using a chart and this went ok. In this case I needed a vor from the airport and first fly over it. Then make a 180 turn and fly into the ils beam. After landing I thought I look up the star for the same rnw (using flight sim commander) and expacted to see the same line draw, but instead it come from any direction (n, s, e, w) and stoped infront of the ils beam. Can anybody explain if there is a relation between star and chart appr's, or are they used saparately? Thanks,Maikel Rozemeijerpe1123

Normally the chart should show exactly what your flightsim commander in showing. Maybe you used old charts and there are newer procedure which are in the FMC.

Greetings from the 737 flightdeck!

If I got your question right, then yes. Approach and STAR procedures are different, but complementary things. The STAR ends where your approach begins. The STAR plate will give you the route and procedures to follow from your last en-route point the IAF (initial approach fix) and the approach plate will guide you from there (the IAF) to the runway. For instance, a STAR plate can contain different arrival procedures coming from every direction and depicting the route from each final en-route point all the way to the IAF. Once it reaches the IAF, the STAR ends and the approach procedure starts. That's the point where you switch charts and get your approach plate. This plate will give you information about everything you need to know to performe this procedure: route, waypoints, frequencies, headings and courses and so on.One thing to keep in mind is that STAR plates don't show your approach procedures because they use a much larger scale. Some don't even have a defined scale. The approach plate, on the other hand, deals with a smaller space, thus a smaller scale, capable of providing you with mor detailed information. Waypoints in a STAR can be dozens of miles away from eachother, while waypoints on the approach are just a couple of miles apart.

There are many STARs that do not end at the IAF tho, for those arrivals you need vectoring to the specific approach. These kind of arrivals are fairly common in the USA.

Forgot about those because here in Brazil most of them end in the IAF. But it's true. Some requre vectoring. The same happens in some SIDs. The plate tells you to follow runway heading or go to a certain navaid, and from there you must wait further instructions from ATC.
