A question about holds

Featured Replies

Hi All,A quick question, i was practising setting up holds last night and i set up a hold at Ockham on the way to approach 27L at heathrow. In the CDU HOLDS page you can set an inbound course but cant seem to change the actual heading for the hold so the plane was flying firstly at 150 degrees and then back at 330 degrees. I checked the charts and this ties in but i am guessing you cant change the headings because that is set in stone so to speak The inbound course only affects what direction you approach the hold from. Is this correct?ThanksCeri

ATC could tell you what they want you to fly (inbound) ... once the CDU/FMC knows that it computes the outbound leg for you.In your case, OCK (hold) is part of the an EGLL STAR on the chart but is not in the e.g. Navigraph Navdata for the STAR.As example, here I set the hold in bound to the fix as 200 with Left turns:Holding to the NorthEast (quadrant) (200-180=20 degree radial) of OCK, 200 inbound, Left turns, 1 minute legs.

No, it is the course you approach Ockham VOR while holding.

Can get confusing! After doing a few holds it gets easier.

The course on the HOLD page is for your inbound/outbound course once established. That is changeable. How you get to the holding fix is up to you and isn't assigned in the fix page.

Everything you would want to modify is available. You might be given a hold as published, but you might not. You might want an unpublished hold and with that you could create your own, particularly useful if you are running a QRH procedure.
