March 16, 201214 yr Got my copy of X-Plane 10 this week. :( I installed it yesterday and started diving into the rendering options. What the best way is to set up XPX for the best visual quality? I seem to be able to run it well, but I am struggling a bit to get the AA/filtering settings to my liking. Should I let the Nvidia Control Panel do the work or let the XPX application? Just curious what others are doing to avoid jaggies and shimmering. I'd like to use HDR, but I seem to get more jaggies with it. XPX looks great with and without it, anyway. For what it's worth, I am running a GTX460 (current driver) and my monitor native res is 1680 X 1050. Thanks for any info. Scott
March 16, 201214 yr Hello,I also tried to control AA and AS settings externally in NV control panel but with no luck, so I use the settings in the rendering options. For me HDR on is the light from the darkness but only using the AA fast render that it's a medium quality AA, my system cannot handle the quad AA setting which is amazing and no jaggies at all (10 fps average) by the way I'm also using the GTX460 but at 1920 x 1080. The only thing I dislike with HDR on with AA fast render is that some instruments like PFD or EFIS don't look as clear as with other settings or with HDR off, this is an issue i'm hopping to see fixed soon.Alex Alexander Colka
March 16, 201214 yr Author Hey Alex. What's weird is that I get better results with overriding AA in the Nvidia Control Panel. If I use the application AA with HDR off, I get terrible jaggies. Much worse than with HDR on the medium AA setting. That actually looks decent, but the roads have jaggies as I fly around. Like you, I am not able to run the highest AA with HDR on. I have only monkeyed with this for one night so far and I am not going to be able to get back to the computer to test anything else for a few hours. Until then, I'm open to any and all suggestions. Scott
March 16, 201214 yr I seem to remember that it is not recommended to have any AA on if using HDR. Could be mistaken tho.
March 16, 201214 yr Author I seem to remember that it is not recommended to have any AA on if using HDR. Could be mistaken tho.In the version I have (I think it's 10.04 rc1), it appears they now prevent you from doing this. The standard in-app AA changes to the HDR AA setting when you click to enable HDR AA. I hope I am explaining that correctly. It was late last night when I was experimenting with all this, so it's likely that I was utilizing minimal brain activity. :( Scott
March 17, 201214 yr Author Quick update. I found out tonight that using AA in the application does work the best. I changed my Nvidia Control Panel back to application controlled. The issue was due to the fact that I did not close X-Plane first and restart it after making adjustments. It did not state in rendering options that it was necessary, but that fixed my issue. Too bad HDR still causes some shimmering. Maybe that will improve in a future update. Time to start looking for scenery and aircraft. It's really looking good now. :( Scott
March 17, 201214 yr Same for me, I love HDR but I can't stand the autogen shimmering and I don't know how to control that externally via nv control panel or nv inspector for refining this, perhaps because it is OpenGL (I'm not an expert on that). Other thing I noticed is the ocean with HDR on and off, are poles apart, with HDR off I get a rare moving shadows of the clouds in the ocean when I bank my plane, with HDR on all is ok. It looks to me that XP10 is designed to have HDR on as a premium display feature.Alex Alexander Colka
March 21, 201214 yr It looks to me that XP10 is designed to have HDR on as a premium display feature. You're right. Ben said that x-plane10 was designed to run in HDR mode and it shows. Whilst this adds a lot to the atmosphere and realism I wouldn't expect much improvement in AA-quality. The rather fast FXAA is fast because it's low quality. This is the tradeoff for HDR rendering in XP - at the moment. But next generation gpus will be able to handle higher quality HDR-AA...Flo Flo B.

Doesn't look as pretty, but it gets rid of the screwy visual effect. I'm torn between excellent AA with HDR off and no water reflections, or poor AA with HDR on and full water reflections. I mght have to get used to shimmering autogen to take advantage of the recent performance improvements regarding HDR. Scott
March 21, 201214 yr Flo ok, so if we use HDR on with no AA at all in rendering options, is there an option to control externally the AA? because for me HDR on with no AA at least shows the glass cockpits clearer and I would like to test the results that way. With NV control panel and NV inspector as I said before I can't do that, I guess again that because it is OpenGL. How can we control OpenGL rendering options externally with Nvidia? And Scott, I feel the same way regarding HDR, and water reflections are key in X-Plane depiction of the world. I really like X-Plane 10 a lot but sometimes I return to X-Plane 9 and I feel so comfortably with the way the scenery looks. Thanks both of you,Alex Alexander Colka
