XPoint of Interest for FSX

Featured Replies

Has anyone use the Points of Interest product from http://www.fsdreamteam.com/products.html ?Is it a worthy buy?Does it work well with addons i.e. are the points in the right spots?Opinions?I kinda get bored when flying so this would be an educational and fun thing to have I would think.

I bought this along time ago and used it a couple of times. As far as I can remember, everything was in the right place. I was using UTX at the time. It was OK, somewhat annoying at times. You can filter types of POi's if I recall, plus you can add your own if my memory serves me correctly. Not bad if you are touring an unfamiliar area.Bob

Can you change the size/shape of the POI flags, they look so huge and obtrusive in the screen shots.

Sorry but I just don't remember, but check out this link to a review by a fella here on Avsim:http://www.avsim.com/pages/0109/FSDreamteam/XPOI.htm

If I remember well, not so long ago a freeware of this was released, see the library.

Saw there is a demo that allows only certain cities for it work. Tried it out.Neat but problem is it doesn't work well at all with vanilla textures. Vast majority of POI areas are simply not there or terribly represented in the bad textures and autogen of base FSX.

I bought this a long time ago.Problem is when you fly say at fl350 and you want to see cities/river/poi names you can't because all the "lables" are too far away and you can't read them.Fsdiscover does the job. You could try fsdiscover and return it you if you don't like it.The main pro of Xpoi is that it connects to geoserver and so it's constantly updated and fsdiscover isn't.

Geoserver seems to contain many more POI than the static FSDiscover. Plus it has Wikipedia directions and info which is very nice. I do like how FSD is displayed for much and simpler (not obtrusive) further cities and such.<sigh> Seems there is no perfect product.Wonder if there is way to display Google Earth POI on a 2nd screen as you fly?

I have it and I must say I really enjoy using it. It is not meant for when flying a heavy cross-country as you will not be able to see the indications from 30,000 feet as mentioned above. I use it when I am exploring or in a part of the world that I am not familiar with. So low flying, GA aircraft are perfect for this. Or say below 10,000 feet they show. Once you get the hang of it, you can customizes just how much you want to see. And you can literally fill your skies with indicators so you need to be picky on what you want to see. And as mentioned it is constantly being updated world-wide so no need to worry about databases or updating.Another use I found for it was to practice my approaches. Let's say I am going to an airport I am unfamiliar with. I will set it up to show airports, VORs, NDB's, Waypoints and this way I can visually see/go through these points and check at that moment I am at the correct altitude. A good learning tool.If I find something interesting I might then click on Google to bring up more information about the indicator - again a great way to learn about "stuff" in new areas. I think it would be a nice addition if you could click on the indicator and then it opens a google window on the subject... that would be pretty cool. For now I just do it manually. But it is not something I have on or use all the time and I can it not being everyone's cup of tea.Clutch
